Hi Kaitlyn, There are several approaches to this. The first that I would take is to examine carefully the size and type of photo. Just the color (or absense) of any borders can give you a general idea when it might have been taken. I use the following website as a general reference: http://www.classyimage.com/dating.htm (also see http://www.acay.com.au/~gsm/photo-dates.html) Another approach is to find out when the photographer was in business. I'm not the right person to ask about Auburn businesses, but one source, the 1900 Auburn, NY Directory at the Cayuga NYGenWeb site has "Amos Underwood et. al." at 109 Genessee St. I did a cursory search and couldn't find Luidsley or Sager on the website. I also looked in Child's 1867-68 Gazeteer. Finally, the style of clothing and hair can give away the general date range. Unfortunately I don't have any particular resources handy for this. Perhaps someone else can share their tips. I should have mentioned that if the picture referred to in my previous request is of my father rather than my paternal grandfather, then it would have been taken about 9/1896 as my father was born in Auburn, 12/1895. Thank you again. Rita Bishop Kautz, Attica, NY ([email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) )
Hello, Cayuga list: I have a picture of a baby that is unidentified. On the back of the picture, in my mother's handwriting, are the words "Grandpa Bishop." This is ambiguous as that could mean the picture is of either my father, Clifford E. Bishop OR my paternal grandfather. If it is a picture of my father she would be labeling it as if she were talking to her grandchildren which seems highly unlikely. I have other pictures in which my paternal grandfather, William Albert Bishop, is referred to in labeling as "Grandpa Bishop." If it is the case that the picture is of William, the picture would have been taken about June of 1873 as William was born in Auburn in August of 1872. The cardboard mounting has the following printed on it: H. R. Luidsley (I believe), No. 109 Genesee Street, Auburn, NY, over Sagar's Drug Store. Can anyone help me date this picture? I am thinking you in advance for your time and caring. Rita Bishop Kautz, Attica, NY ([email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) )
Yes, I would like to see the images on a web site. Unfortunately, I have to move all the images received via e-mail to a folder (perhaps burn to a cd) for later viewing so I can watch for surname inquiries via the board e-mail. Anthing that is eyepleasing and can help further research is appreciated. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Hecht" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, March 03, 2005 9:37 AM Subject: [NYCAYUGA] Another Question > Maybe I should also ask the question: > > How many out there DO NOT travel to Cayuga County, the County Offices, or > to Museums here because "everything" is on the web? > > and while I am asking > > How many would rather see images on the web in enlarged formats > rather than > small, one size images in a book ? > > I contend that there is a place for both and that there is no way the > pictures will ever be published in a paper format so that people can see > the enlarged images. I don't know to whom I should send this inquiry, so I guess you'll all get it. 'Sorry about that. Yesterday at 6:51 pm Mountain Standard Time I emailed a post to [email protected] The subject line was "surname Manahan". I did not receive a copy of that post and I am wondering if I also did not receive any replies to it. I know it made it to [email protected] and was distributed because I received a private email about Manahan. Is there anyway to check on this? Thanks. Pat
Does anyone on list list have access to either Abstracts of wills of Cayuga County, New York, 1799-1842. Volumes 1-4 - FHL US/CAN Film [ 844646 Item 2 ] or Another filming, 1971 Copy in DAR Library, Washington - FHL US/CAN Film [ 860300 Item 3 ] I am looking for the text of the will of Hugh Manahan written 24 Aug. 1807 and probated 8 Nov. 1808 in Scipio, Cuyuga, New York. Thank you. Pat
Marilyn, The other Miles Georgia is Miles R. Georgia, son of my Miles' brother, Elijah. And in reference to mistakes... Nancy's name was Beadle not Beadley or whatever abomination I wrote the first time! Thanks again, Georgia
Lettie was born in New York. Lucretia Handy was born in Vermont. I haven't a clue as to what her maiden name was nor to which Landon she was married. I cannot figure it out. I would be happy just to know her first husband's name. The maiden name would be icing on the cake! Thanks again for taking the time to answer my query. Georgia

You are mistaken about the identity of Lucretia. Lucretia Handy Landon was the wife of John Landon, not Lettie H. Landon (widow), wife of Miles Georgia. I think Lettie Landon might have been the mother of John. Although I've never seen a source, lots of folks on the internet give Nancy Beadle as John's mother. This is the riddle I am attempting to solve. Georgia Whitson
ca 1833, the widow, Lettie Landon, married the widower, Miles Georgia and they moved to Rollin, Lenawee County, Michigan. They moved to Rollin at the same time that John Landon did. In the 1850 census, Miles Georgia and his wife, Lettie, live immediately next door to John Landon. They live a few doors from Samuel and Bingham Landon and their families. John and Bingham had land transactions with Miles and Lettie. Both had Cayuga County histories. I cannot identify Lettie's first husband. Her name was Letitia H. (___) Landon. She was b. 01 October 1791 and d. 14 May 1868. Mary Jane Landon married Henry Marlett and they had a daughter Lettie. All the Landons mentioned, John, Samuel, Bingham and Mary Jane are the purported children of Silas Landon and Nancy Beadly. How are they connected to Lettie? Can anyone identify her for me? Thanks so much, Georgia Whitson
Hmm, I see your Miles Georgia died in Rollin in 1869, so not in 1870 MI Census, so not yours. Georgia, Could it be the Handy men were her brothers-in-law or even her brothers or she was the sister to one of their wives? Michigan kept very good records from the 1830's on, unlike NY. Her death certifcate or death record, if she died in MI should list her parents names & who gave the inf. & the relationship. Sorry, I goofed reading the first e-mail.
