    1. Thank you
    2. to all who helped me with dating my photographs. I learned at lot about an area in which I had almost no knowledge except that my pictures were "old," hardly a criterion for good genealogy!! Thanks again. Rita Kautz, Attica, NY ([email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) )

Mary Anne Mary Anne Lee Technical Assistant Academic Advising Madonna University 36600 Schoolcraft Livonia, MI 48150 (734) 432-5748 -----Original Message----- From: Judy Landauer [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, March 13, 2005 10:20 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [NYCAYUGA] Dating old photos Dear listers If anyone would like information on dating old photographs I can send a PDF file entitled "Photography as a Tool in Genealogy" to whomever wants one. I found it on a photography site a few years ago but it look like they've removed it now. This file explains the difference between ambrotypes, tin types, etc. and includes original price, the date range that they were produced, how they were packaged, etc. etc., and TONS of other info that would help a person decide just what kind of picture they have. Because of this file, I was able to solve the mystery of why I had a cardboard-backed photo of a 80 year old ancestress who died in 1855! Turns out it is a rare Calotype, which are only found now in museums. They were produced from 1845-1855 (approx). The problem with them is that the image faded quickly and now most images are only ghostly shadows of the original. I scanned it and ran it through photoshop elements, which worked wonders to bring back a lot of the details of the original. If anyone would like a copy of this file, please let me know and I will send it to them. 2. Rod Fleck
    3. I am looking for information on a James Hadlock, wife Asa, who was living in Locke. I have found him in the following sources: 1810 Census 1820 Census - Locke, Cayuga County 1831 - Makes out will - lists wife, Asa, children: Jeremiah Hadlock, Peter Hadlock, Charlotte Ferril, Elizabeth Smith, Mercy Cole and Permely Cook (Permelia - daughter of James Cook who was an early settler of Locke). 1833 - Petition for Am. Rev. War Veterans Pension - He notes that after the war he had lived in "Cortland's Patent on the Delaware River"; Chenago, and next in Locke where he was residing at the date of his petition. 9 Feb 1836 - He has moved to Crawford County, Pennsylvania on account "that he is now in the State of Pennsylvania where he intends to remain.the following are his reasons for removing from New York to Pennsylvania, viz his children had all removed from the State of New York. Would love to have some clues about this man's family and where they headed off to! I know about the Cook line - but what about Jeremiah??? Rod Fleck Forks, WA

    3. Judy--I too would like a copy of the article on dating old photos. I would like to add something that is often overlooked when dealing with some of these processes. The procedures such as tintype, which worked directly with an original exposed in the camera, gave an inverted image. Those old tintypes need to be reversed left to right to give a correct image, something you can do in your photo editing program if you are copying them. Bill Lester

    3. Rita is looking for help on photo identification and dating. Rita stated the photographer as H. R. Luidsley (I believe), No. 109 Genesee Street, Auburn, NY, over Sagar's Drug Store. _______________ At the Cayuga County Historian's Office there is a project by Don Weber re: Auburn Photographers. It is comprised of a group of index cards listing each photographer's business name, photographer(s) name, business address and year they are listed in the City Directories under that name. Here is what Mr. Weber has for any combination of Lindsley. As you will note, they moved around, changed business names, partnered and unpartnered often. It's very confusing without Mr. Weber's notes. Harvey B. Lindsley is listed below at 109 Genesee in 1901 (note Harvey seems to be brother to H. R. Lindsley). Don't know if this will help Rita but it might provide some hint. Pat Photographer Name Address Years Listed in Directory under that specific name Lindsley & Brother 99 Genesee St. 1875-76 H. R.
