Hello listers, My computer is dying & I have inf. to share & I want it posted before I lose the inf. This is inf. written down in the 1870's (?) & a copy sent to me by my cousin, Charlotte, who descends from Margaret Melissa Tanner who married Harmon Gilson Brown in Nov. of 1867 in Cayuga County, NY. Hello, Who is related out there? We think that our Martha Elizabeth "Betsey" DEVOE who married Ira W. CALL, might be Daniel's sister. Betsey DEVOE born about 1816. Mentz or Montezuma or both Thank you Judy [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected])
For free census checks: Are you in or near a good sized city? Our public library has computers reserved for genealogy research ... with free access to both Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest. (I actually find the census information easier to deal with on Heritage Quest.) Our library also has a system where those with library cards can go online through them from home and access Heritage Quest (but not Ancestry). Diane Herson
Dear List, I finally completed the subject Census and as soon as the coordinator post the Census for Cayuga County, Auburn, NY 1880 ED 2, it will be available for searching. Please note that it has NOT get been proofread. If anyone would like to volunteer to do so, will provide CD (done in Excel). This was done between my Grandson being flooded out & losing everything to the flood and nursing a 7 week old puppy back to health (had serious head injury due to other resident dog in home). Grandson is getting settled with many prayers and help from my family - puppy is coming along just great, but may be blind. But puppy is so darn cute, I'll just make the best of it & try to give him a great life. Hope the 1880 Census, when posted to USGenWeb, helps someone. It has been fun doing & very educational to me. I will be proceeding with ED3 for the subject. Jan Scholar of Godfrey Memorial Library Volunteer for: Italian Genealogical Group and USGenWeb Census Project
We believe that our Betsey, my ggg grandmother was a DEVOE. (obtained the information from a son's death certificate). Will be doing further research to make sure. 1840 census for Mentz, Cayuga CO, NY.: is a D. Devoe living 5 residences away from Ira CALL. was a David DEVOE in earlier Cayuga Co., NY censuses with a daughter of the right age to be Betsey. 1850 census there is a David DEVOE still living in Mentz, died and buried in the early 1850's in the Montezuma Rural Cemetery. was a Daniel DEVOE (son of David) on an 1853 map for the Town of Mentz in Cayuga County. Can anyone help us out? Judy [email protected]

Although I rely on Ancestry and the web for a lot of information, I've recently "discovered" that much of this, including Ancestry, is freely available at local Family History Centers around the country, sponsored by the Latter-day Saints. What surprised me was that they have access to a number of publications that are not online or even referenced in the LDS hosted FamilySearch.org. I did a quick lookup at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp and found the following center near Lena, IL: Freeport Illinois Forest Road Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois, United States Phone: 815-232-3310 Hours: W 6:30pm-9pm; Th 9am-12pm Attention: Does not have film circulation. I'd recommend you call to find out exactly what they have. The comment regarding film circulation most likely means they don't have a microfilm reader, which could severely limit access at that location to many LDS resources, however they probably have at least one computer with online access. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donna DeVoe" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, May 11, 2005 8:19 PM Subject: [NYCAYUGA] DeVoe research > Would like to know of a census research site that does not require me to > join Ancestry.com. Donna & Duane, You need to look at Adams Township, Green County, WI for a biography of the family: http://www.monticellowi.com/GreenCo/AdamsHistory.htm George Devoe, one of the pioneers of the town of Adams, was born in Cayuga Co., N. Y., March 14, 1806. He was married to Elizabeth Kinney, a native of the same county. In 1815 they emigrated to Michigan, going by land, to Buffalo, thence by the lakes. They lived in Jackson county, where they rented land until 1845, then with one ox team, the family started west to seek a home, taking with them their household goods and camping out by the way. They came to the Territory of Wisconsin and made a claim near the present site of the village of Wayne. He built a log cabin and lived there until July of that year, then sold out and came to Green county, making a claim on section 6 of what is now the town of Adams. He had three yoke of oxen and engaged in teaming lead from Mineral Point to Milwaukee, a distance of 125 miles. He built a log house and made some improvement on his land that fall, and the following year raised a p. 647 crop of spring wheat and some corn. At that time he had seven sons, some of them grown, and the boys were engaged in mining, teaming and farming. Game was plenty, and the boys being expert deer hunters, kept the family well supplied with meat. In 1861 Mr. Devoe removed to Argyle, where he bought a house and lot and spent the reminder of his days. He died July 8, 1862. His widow now lives with her son, William A., in the town of Cadiz. There were twelve children born to them, six of whom are now living-Orson B., George S., Loron B., William A., Phebe A. and Mary A. George S. Devoe now owns and occupies the old homestead. He was born in Cayuga Co., N. Y., April 4, 1833, and was but four years old when his parents moved to Michigan, and twelve years old when they settled in this county, where he grew to manhood. He assisted his father in clearing a farm, in mining, teaming, etc., and shared with his brothers the pleasures of hunting and fishing. He was married, Dec. 6, 1855, to Oretta M. Oviatt, who was born in the State of Ohio, June 9, 1839. He bought forty acres of land on section 7. He built a house on his father's land and lived there one year, then moved to Lafayette county and rented land three years, then returned to the town of Adams and settled on the old homestead. They have six children living-William S., Richard L., Lawrence G., Charley W., Clarence O. and Millie A. Transcribed by Gordon E. Holcomb There are many free census sites online, the LDS site for Family Search for 1880, MI 1870 Census free. Chances are WIGENWEB-Green County might have a free census. Hello Susan, First thing I check is the Cayuga County NYGENWEB & the index of the Cayuga County Biographical Review for family names, then view the scanned pages for a link. I found an Jonathan Ingersoll & lots of Parker's,. Then since Augustus went to MI I checked the Gendis MI death index & found him. I googled Augustus & found another entry, but I found no James & Rachel (Ingersoll) Parker, although I found someone on genforum looking for the family of an Archiblad Parker of Cayuga County & his wife, Hazel Mae weaver & they had 17 children & lived in Cayuga County, NY, also. I guess next would be the 1850 Census, if James &/or Rachel were still living or 1860. In 1880 Thomastown, Saginaw Co., MI Augustus is listed as Augustin and states his parents were born in New York, he in NY, so: Household: Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace Augustin PARKER Self M Male W 67 NY Farmer NY NY Mary PARKER Wife M Female W 41 CAN Keeping House CAN CAN Margaret PARKER Dau S Female W 10 MI At School NY CAN William PARKER Son S Male W 9 MI At School NY CAN Phellena PARKER Dau S Female W 7 MI At School NY CAN -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source Information: Census Place Thomastown, Saginaw, Michigan Family History Library Film 1254603 NA Film Number T9-0603 Page Number 198D Here is the death record: MI GENDIS has this recorded about Augustus Parker: PARKER, AUGUSTUS Date of death: 29-Oct-1881 Ledger Page: 108 Record Number: 776 Place of death: Thomastown County of Death: Saginaw Sex: Male Race: WHITE Marital Status: Married Age: 69 years 2 months 17 days Cause of Death: ACCIDENT Birthplace: NEW YORK Occupation: FARMER Father's Name: Parker, JAMES Father's Residence: CAYUGA CO NEW YORK Mother's Name: PARKER, RACHAEL Mother's Residence: CAYUGA CO NEW YORK Date of record: 5-Jun-1882 Names are in the form last name, first, middle. The notation Not Recorded or NR above indicates that the ledger page was left blank in that spot. Augustus Parker, 40, who married Mary Margaret Moore, 25, 18 May 1865 at Saginaw, Michigan. On the back of the marriage license is a listing of their children, Rachel 2 February 1866, Mathe 14 March 1867, Mary 1868, Mary Margaret 3 November 1868 (m. Charles J. Pabst 29 September 1886), William 1871, Pauline 15 March 1873 (m. Unknown Holstrom), James Patrick 17 March 1876, Joseph 1878, Anne 1879 and another child b. 1881. There is a notation that Augustus Parker d. 26 October 1881.
I am new to the list. I am looking for any information regarding my greatggrandfather, James Parker and wife, Rachel Ingersoll. The only information I have is that James was born about 1703-31.I do not know if James or Rachel was born in Cayuga County or where in the county they lived. They died there. They had a son, Augustus, born in 1812. Augustus moved to Saginaw, Michigan about 1860. I would be interested also in with whom or where might I start doing research for Cayuga County. Susan
