I just got off the phone with Cayuga County Planning and they told me that the Brockway house is dirrectly on the BOCES site. No doubt about it. Now how do we get State review started on this? bill hecht
Hi Maud, Mertice was born 3 June 1905 in Auburn. The SSDI has her deathdate as March 1982. The proximity of deathdates between her and Silas may or may not be meaningful. Since I live in California, I don't know how much I can help with Cayuga County research past what I can find on the net. I don't know where Mertice is buried. It is possible, they could be buried in Soule Cemetery in Sennett, NY, but that is a guess. However, it's an educated guess. Mertice's parents Charles and Josephine (BERRY) CHAPPEL are buried there, as are her brother Eugene C. (or Charles Eugene) CHAPPEL (1900-1970) and her sister Gertrude Arlene (CHAPPEL) TABER (1902-2002) and their spouses. Nor do I know where Mertice's younger sister Mary Elizabeth "Betty" (CHAPPEL) LANGHAM (1911-2002) is buried. I don't know if there were any children. Mertice was living with her parents at the time of the 1930 Census. However, the name Silas gives me something new to work on. Is anyone related or have information on David DEVOE married to Mary (aka Polly) RICE (possible parents of Daniel DEVOE who married Phoebe WHITE). Does anyone have the sibling information on Daniel DEVOE born abt 1813 possibly born in St Lawrence County or Cayuga County or Wayne County, New York. Daniel and wife resided in Mentz, Montezuma, or Port Byron, Cayuga County, New York (are buried in Wayne County, New York. Also were members of the Montezuma & Mentz Episcopal Methodist Church; as members they and Libby DEVOE, stated their residence as North of Village Montezuma. We think that our Martha Elizabeth DEVOE or might be Mary Elizabeth DEVOE or Mary and name of Betsey might be nicknames, she was born in 1816. Thank you Judy [email protected]
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~springport/pictures130/brockwayweb/ These are unprocessed jpg's with no adjustments or sharpening Seems a shame to at least not record this building. Ironic that here we have BOCES teaching drafting, photography, carpentry and mansonry but those very skills are not being put to use here to at least historically record this structure. Photos could be taken and drawings made in the drafting class. Back in the 1930's the Federal Government employed photographers and architects to record some of the old buildings. One of the building recorded was the Wait Farm home just to the east of this site. Should we not do the same today. Seems to me it would be a great educational opportunity for BOCES. bill ============= http://www.syracusethenandnow.net/Architects/Brockway/Albert_L_Brockway.htm Albert L. Brockway (1864-1933) Albert Brockway was born in Utica in 1865, attended the Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn, then studied architecture at L'École des Beaux Arts in Paris. In the early years of his professional life he was associated with Ernest Flagg in New York. In Syracuse he was in partnership with John P. Benson (1898-1905) and Alfred Taylor (1905-07). From 1893-95 Brockway served as Professor of Architecture at Syracuse University where he revised the curriculum to more closely follow that of L'École des Beaux Arts. From 1913 to 1914 he was construction architect with the New York State Architect. He served as consulting architect for the New York State Agricultural College at Cornell and the State Capitol in Albany. From 1915-1933 he was a member of the State Board of Examiners for registration of architects. A Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, he was also an active member of the local chapter and its president in 1933. Brockway was a member of the Beaux Arts Society and chairman of the first City Planning Commission of Syracuse in 1918. He received a personal award from Governor Roosevelt for his plan to extend the State Fair Grounds, for which he also designed three buildings. Brockway published several articles: "The influence of the French School of Design upon Architecture in America," _American Architect and Building News_ 66, Nov. 25, 1899, p. 61+. Thanks for the explanation. One thing I did not notice but someone pointed out was the very long white pipe going down to the lake. Is it an insulated water intake?? ========================== Great shot, Bill. In the first photo, in addition to those crazy driveways, I noticed one large pipe extending from a villa into the lake. It's too large to be a water intake pipe, so I can only guess what it is. You probably guessed this too. Maybe you need a watchdog organization like our "Save the River" up at the Thousand Islands. Often those issuing permits are eager to have new development contribute to the local tax base. They may not be inclined to discourage easy "improvement" of undeveloped land. ================== Hi, Folks, Bill, these are great pictures. Thank you. Okay. First of all, the trees aren't burnt. The pictures were taken in April (note fine print at the bottom). They are hardwoods. They lose their leaves in winter and thus appear quite barren until they begin their new spring growth. By now, the hillsides are covered in myriad shades of green. Yes, several someones built roads to or near the lakeside or have long walkways down to it. What you perhaps cannot discern from the picture and wouldn't know if you've never been there is that those are sheer rock walls close to or exceeding 100 feet vertical height, with precious little shoreline at the bottom. The deep crevaces (deep vertical shadows) are what we call "gulleys". Very steep, very deep, usually covered in loose shale rock which makes them extremely dangerous to try to climb or hike around. My cousin died in such an accident. Please note the stairways leading to the shoreline are very, very long. They are tight to the face of the rock wall. Does that give you some idea of the distance? The roadway is FAR above all this. The inexperienced eye can probably not tell from this photograph the steep angle of the "driveways" down to the houses clinging to the side of the hill. Look closely and you will see that most of the paths zig-zag back and forth. That should give you some idea of the steepness they are traversing. It would be impossible to drive a vehicle straight up through there. It's rather like those idiots in California who insist on building their homes hanging off the hillsides ... and then bemoaning when they periodically fall into the sea. (Forgive me if I offend any Californins here.) At least in NY they're built on solid rock base. Why anyone would want to go to the expense, effort and danger of building the way they do is, personally, beyond me. Think of the effort just to go for a swim!!! I agree with Bill, "What were they thinking!!!" But then, the engineering feat itself is worthy of note. Lyn So many ancestors ----- so little time.
Be sure to closely examine the LARGE version of this picture. It is hard to believe this ever was permitted. Bill Hart wrote re - the Barrett family and Mertice Murdock. Thank you Bill for your information. Firstly, I too had ' Mertice Murdock' set aside until your information came through and you gave me her maiden name - Chappel. I now believe that she was the wife of Silas Marshall Murdock, son of Archie H Murdock from Lisnaree, Newry, Co. Down, Northern Ireland. The common connection with the pair is that Silas Marshall Murdock was a foreman in the Rope Company in the census of 1930, and Mertice worked in the Rope Company in 1930. Silas Marshall Murdock's father Archibald died in 1917 and he too was associated with the Columbia Company. Archibald had in the late 19C rented the Dunning farm on Genessee Street for 20 years (he was a farmer in Ireland) before immigrating in 1883. The only information after 1930 which I had on Silas Marshall Murdock was that he was elected president of the Industrial Club in the 1950's - until his death in March 1982. I see that Mertice died in the same year. Most of the Murdocks are buried in Fort Hill - but I could not find the location of Silas Marshall;s grave. If this connection is correct - this is a real breakthrough. Apologies for misleading you on the name 'Barrett' I should have typed - Barnett -- William G. Barnett married Elsie Morton whose sister was married to Archie H Murdock. Sincere apologies Bill. I am interested in any listing of soldiers from Cayuga County for the Mexican War. I am particularly interested in George Rodgers, who received bounty land in Wisconsin for his Mexican War service. Any information is greatly appreciated. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mel Slane" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, May 29, 2005 7:22 AM Subject: RE: [NYCAYUGA] Source for 1812 soldiers from Cayuga? > There are definitely some gaps in the information. Forget my earlier questions about where to click to get to those databases. I finally figured out that my firewall was blocking the database entry forms, they just weren't appearing. Then can you please tell me where on that website you click to find the data on veterans from other states ? I just clicked on every link I could find on that page and they all refer to data on PENNSYLVANIA veterans. I clicked on the URL "Pennsylvania Volunteers of the Civil War" and everything on that following page was specific to Pennsylvania. I would love to check on some people from other states if I could just find the right link !!!! Rod, The first number in the list is the claim number for the equipment claim as it is called. Obviously this will also trigger NARA if necessary to find the right person if required.
