Betty, thank you for the info, I'll check it out and see if I can figure it out. I found with the RM program than I'm not able to burn a direct CD from it, so I'm going to have to come up with another source and this might work. Brenda: Family History CD from the Jefferson Project, go to their website at www.familyhistorycd.com for a trial version. Read the manual available. I loved the idea that I could create my family's own CD program to share. With the various branches I am researching for myself and my husband, I found this an easy way to separate the lines. Burning - sending - these CD's is less expense than printing out reports. They are easy to update & add to. Many of the pictures I have are of family group gatherings taken in the early 1900's. Using the "face labels" is really 'neat' ! and there's no doubt which face goes with which name. When my grandchildren show these pictures to their grandchildren, the information will still be right there. This is a self-running program, so anyone can put the CD on their computer and see/read the information you put on it. Try it, you may get excited about it, too. Adding my 2-cents about genealogy programs. I use RootsMagic. Love it's simplicity. Does everything I need it to. If you have a question - contact them and they will answer. They have a website http://www.rootsmagic.com./ where you can download a free version. I have used the creator's programs since 1990. Since you asked - I have been doing family history research for over thirty years and have tried/used all the the aforementioned genealogical software. The best kept secret that I know of is "Ancestral Quest", a superb program with all the bells and whistles, plus a very responsive and pleasant support group. They offer a free trial, so you can go see for yourselves, if you like: http://www.ancquest.com/ I have used the program for ten years now and have no financial interest in this company. Sally
Bill, You are correct. But I can't speak for the latest FTM 2005 edition. I also started using Roots Magic, it's easy, but the one thing that I did wrong was trying to merge my files, I have several duplicates and haven't figure out how to delete some of them. They give several different options on how to do this, and of course I picked the wrong one, or I didn't follow directions. I think I had been using FTM 10, and it worked very good on importing onto the RM's. I like the option of having two gedcom's opened at the same time and being able to drop and add. I too have been using TMG for quite sometime and will agree that its not the easiest program to use. For me, it was the closest program out there that was similiar to the old "Roots" program, which was great. I picked up FTM early on (before TMG, as a replacement for the old defunct Roots program), but am finally rid of FTM, as I found a much better program, its called RootsMagic. That link is: http://www.clooz.com/ I won't quit using TMG - took me long enough to figure it out, but I do like RootsMagic. I worthy software!!! Just my two cents worth. OK, here's the message I sent David: >Hi, David, > >As I said to the list, I'm responding privately so the list stays on-topic. > >Given that you already know that TMG is somewhat harder to use, TMG and Legacy are still better than FTM 2005. FTM still has many of the same old limitations, including limited types of events, poor support for citation of sources, and others. Most of what has changed is the look, along with, as you note, Web searching. > >I am not as familiar with Legacy; I've tried it and all, but I don't work in it. But it does have better source support, and it has similar or better publishing capability. > >By searching, do you mean searching for people within your data, or searching for additional genealogy info on the web? > >TMG has excellent searching (filtering) capabilities within its data. You can even search for people who have attached exhibits (what FTM calls the scrapbook), and both Legacy and TMG have extensive Web searching capabilities. In TMG you can also customize and extend the list of places to search. Legacy's places to search isn't customizable (it takes you to a web page where you can search a list provided by Millenia, the publisher), and the list of places seems sort of oddball. > >However, there is a program that can be used as an add-on for either one. Folks - First, I apologize for the cross posting. I am trying to learn more about this specific resource. Second, I am trying to figure out the location of the documents that would have awarded this pension to Joel Downs. The source noted below is a book that was transcribed and posted on line, but the transcriptionist is a bit silent about what the number means on the far right. Myself and other researchers presume it refers to a NARA number. HOWEVER, when I was in DC about two months ago and I quickly looked for military information on this individual and found only a military roster extract for him. What intrigues me is that it says Joel Downs was on the rolls of Captain Jehiel Dayton's Company of Artillery Pliny Adam's Regiment, NY Militia. But that he was in the regiment for less than two weeks and was listed as "absent-sick" name in pre. Column cancelled. This was in Sep 1814. YET - in Ohio, everything about him refers to his being a Veteran of the War of 1812. When I found reference to his pension, I thought, maybe this will clear some things up. I have done a lot of other veteran related work, and I am a bit surprised that anyone would be so proud of service of 9 days which was spent being sick. The more I thought about it, I almost wonder if he might have served in other regiments or earlier service and that I didn't find his records. A DC based researcher went back to NARA and tried to find this record - no luck whatsoever. They found the same document I did and that was it. The Trumbull County archivists notes that they have no index that lists such a claim. They surmised that a page by page review of the Court of Common Pleas could be worthwhile. But, since he was in Warren, Trumbull County, OH, from 1818 until his death in 1862. So, a 36 year search in a few hour visit to that part of Ohio in a month does not foresee a success. So, I am asking folks if anyone is familiar with this source??? If so, could you provide some direction as to where to look for the Pension application documents?? Hi all I use Family Tree Maker 2005 and have enjoyed it's new searching capabilities. I have used it for over 7 years, not trying anything else, and of course I did have to pay for all the updates. The question I have, is: How does the new FTM 2005 compare to the TMG & Legacy programs that have been highly recommended in this forum, both in searching capabilities, and information storing and sharing? Is it easy to transfer FTM files to the TMG program? Will all the photos that I have in FTM program be transferred to the TMG program during the conversion? Does TMG have support from Ancestry.com and all the other resource sites FTM uses in it's searching mode? David -------Original Message------- From: Barbara Zanzig Date: 06/26/05 18:02:14 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NYCAYUGA] Genealogy program Hi, Janet, I'm with [email protected]; I use TMG almost exclusively. I use Family Tree Maker to exchange with other people (because they have FTM) and for some output. In addition to what s/he said, I should say that you can simplify the complexity -- it has a simple and advanced mode. And you are not forced to use all the features. I think it's better as a research tool than as a report-producing tool. If your primary purpose is to share information, you are probably better off with a simpler program (although I would recommend Legacy over Family Tree Maker.) Please need help.... Silas CALL and his wife Polly WHITNEY resided for a while in this area Mentz (or Montezuma or Port Byron) (and possibly some of their children lived with neighbors in the area after their father died). We are seeking his death date and of course place of death and burial place. Have all the cemeteries been transcribed in this area??? Any suggestions as to who might know for around the years 1827, 1828 and maybe 1829??? We do know he died of influenza. Thank you so much. Judy [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected])
