Now that I have my head on Straight, Steamburgh had a post office in the Town of Cold Spring, Cattaraugus County.. Cold Spring was a census town. Steamburgh even had a train depot, because on a foggy morning in October, 1872, a collision occurred at the depot between a freight train and a passenger train. This depot was apparently a dangerous place to be, for in 1888, on Sunday morning, Feb. 5th, an eastbound passenger train plowed into the back of a freight train standing on a side track at the depot. William M. Brown erected a steam saw-mill in Steamburgh in 1858. E. L. Lyon in 1851 built a steam saw-mill in Steamburgh village. I did see your message of the Steamburgh in Schuyler County, which is in French's, but I believe the poster was looking for the Steamburgh in Cattaraugus County, which evidently was not formed by 1860. According to "American Place Names of Long Ago," there is a Steamburgh in SW Cattaraugus County, population in 1890 was approx. 300. Perhaps this Steamburgh was settled after French's Gazetteer was published in 1860, thus explaining why no mention of it appears in French's work. Maureen M.
