    1. [NYCATTAR] NYCATTAR Policy with regards to recent EMGS/PHGS discussions

    3. Hello Folks, I try as much as possible to stay off his list and not to interfere with the flow of information between subscribers. However, there are times when I must step in. The intent of this list is to share family genealogical information. Recently we have strayed from this goal. There have been some recent discussion regarding the politics of the EMGS/PHGS issue, most of which I feel are inappropriate for this forum. I understand there are some hard feelings on both sides of the issue However, this mailing list will NOT become a forum for venting those feeling. I realize too, that some messages on this subject have already been sent. Some of you may feel compelled to answer them. I cannot "un-ring a bell" and "unsend" messages that have already been sent. However, If you feel compelled to respond to a previous message, please direct your comments to the originator of the message and/or to me, and not to the NYCATTAR list as a whole.. Concerning the NYCATTAR mailing list policy: 1. The NYCATTAR mailing list policy prohibits "commercial activity" without the express approval of Rootsweb. This policy does NOT bar the mentioning or recommending a commercial site to fellow subscribers as long as that site is related to genealogy . As a matter of fact, we encourage you to let fellow subscribers know of any genealogical resource find that you feel provide a good service, be they commercial, non-profit, or strictly volunteer, There is a line however, between recommending and advertising. Advertising IS prohibited except in very special situations with Rootsweb approval. If you feel someone has run afoul of this prohibition, please email me, including a the "quoted" message. 2. Regarding commercial sites: The mere fact that an organization charges a fee for membership or services, or asks for donations does not, by itself, make that organization a "commercial" site. Not does it reflect on its quality as a genealogical source. Many non-for-profit organizations charge fees and dues, including many historical associations, libraries, archives, and governmental offices. This does NOT preclude you from recommending or mentioning them, or even relating a bad experience to fellow subscribers, within the bounds of general "nettiquette". However, Out-and-out "FLAMES" will not be tolerated. If you have any further questions about this list, acceptable use policies etc., or just wish to discuss it further, please direct your comments to me at nycattar@rochester.rr.com. Questions regarding my policies should be directed to the State Coordinator by mailing: rainelane@earthlink.net Regards, Dick Allen NYCATTAR List Administrator

    3. Thanks, Dick, for replying with your comments to the list. I'm sure we are all anxious to return our focus to genealogy. Maureen M.
