He married April 30, 1851 at Cherry Creek, CHAUTAUQUA CO NY., Eliza Ann BROWN She was born April 15, 1832; died January 2, 1901. The marriage was performed by Rev. McCoon. They moved to Missouri, apparently after the birth of John Thomas. There he enlisted at St. Joseph, Mo. March 7, 1862 in Co. E., 4th Missouri State Militia. He evidently saw active duty during the Civil War as military records note issuance of a replacement for his horse, killed in battle. After the War he lived for a short while in Uniontown, Mo., near St. Louis. He loved to move and lived also in Lee Co., Mo. and in Wapalo Co., Ia., living at Plattesville and near Athelston, Ia. In 1877 they moved to Rook Co., Kansas along with relatives of the Brown family. There they lived in a sod house, plastered inside. Later Ira built a fine stone house for his family. When they moved there, there we! re still evidences of Indian terror, burned out farmhouses, etc. although they never saw an Indian in Kansas. They traveled there pioneer style in a covered wagon with the cattle following behind, fording creeks and traveling across the open prairie. Times were hard and about 1888 they returned to Worth Co., Mo. Ira was a farmer but most loved his trade as blacksmith. His death was caused by an accident in his blacksmith shop when he injured his hand with a hammer. Blood poisoning resulted, causing his death. He is buried in the Honey Grove cemetery near Grant City, Mo. The Chautauqua Co., N. Y. census of 1850 shows him as a farm laborer on the farm of Norman and Malinda Mills in Cherry Creek twp.
