    1. [NYCATTAR] Baileys in Cattaraugus 1830-1850

    3. I'm trying to solve a riddle regarding two Lydia Baileys. One born in Ct, I think, 1786 - 1791 and the other born around 1832 in Cattaraugus. In 1850 I find a Lydia of about 62 as head of household in Dayton with three children including a Lydia of about the right age plus a boarder. The two Lydias are together in the 1855 census in the hh of the younger Lydia's husband, William Hitchcock in Dayton. The elder Lydia is shown as "mother-in-law" and in shown as having lived in Cattaraugus for 30 years (1825). Lydia 2 is shown as having lived there 17 years, so came there when she was 5 years old. Because (based on these age estimates) Lydia 2 was born when Lydia 1 was 40-45 years old, depending on which census you pick, I suspect she may not be a daughter in fact but may have been adopted by her grandmother or aunt, Lydia 1. In such a case Lydia 1 would be her legal mother and hence a mother-in-law, but not a biological mother. I'm therefore looking for clues about at least one male Bailey of Lydia 1's age and/or perhaps a husband-wife of Baileys who could be Lydia 2's parents. My guess is the deaths would be between 1840 and 1850 in or near Dayton. Lydia 1 would have been my GGG grandmother. Thanks for any help. Heath Boyer
