I'm sorry to say I have no idea if the S.S. Nichols mentioned in the death notice from the Olean newspaper is Sanford Nichols or not. It is hard to even know whether this S.S. Nichols was even from New York - newspapers in those days often posted death notices of veterans from other areas. Good luck in your search.
