There are posters there who have extensive knowledge of that county. The town of Pomfret was not formed until the early 1800`s & the land where Chautauqua & Cattaraugus counties lie was not purchased from the native Americans until the 1790`s. Prior to that time it was mostly wilderness with few, if any, white settlers. As far as I know there was no native tribe there called the Chautauqua. Pat R.
