    1. Re: [NYCATTAR] newspaper in Salamanca for obits? Looking for Laskowski, Vesneski
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: lauhow Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.cattaraugus/10474.3.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Salamanca is small but growing. It's newspaper is in its 140th year and growing as well. The Salamanca Republican-Press was so named because it was a merger of two papers: The Cattaraugus Republican and The Salamanca Press. After the original family sold out in the 1980s, the paper's name was again shortened to The Salamanca Press, (someone thought Republican-Press sounded political). I am the current editor. The 1979 obituary would not be found on our web archive, since we only started posting obits a few years ago. Unfortunately, we don't have the staff time to do look-ups for people (I wish we did)and our microfilm reader does not print. We do supply microfilm to the Salamanca Public Library, where microfilm images can be printed. If you have a contact in the city or if the library staff is willing (I do not know if this is the case, perhaps you could obtain the obit that way. 3. Ancestry.com apparently has scanned and OCR'ed some of the Salamanca Republic issues. I don't recall the date range but I know a couple were from the late 1800's. I had done a lookup of Hudson Ansley at the time. Image retrieval can be excruciatingly slow unless you have a high speed connection and you will need the appropriate ancestry subscription to do a search.
