There are a lot of obits & burial records in Machias, so this might prove to be a real learning experience! Cenotaphs were quite common in the 19th century. There is one in Maplewood Cemetery, Springville, for my immigrant Prior ancestor, James Prior. He was lost overboard, mid-Atlantic, in April 1834, leaving an intrepid wife and nine children! The youngest child was not even a year old. James' body was never recovered. Anne Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
