    3. Call for Volunteers to Transcribe 1892 Index to NY State Census records for Cattaraugus County: As many of you know, LDS has made available online the actual state census records for Cattaraugus County for all towns for 1865 and half of the towns for 1892, however there is NO INDEX to find your ancestor. The Cattaraugus county Museum gave us permission to transcribe and digitize their old typwritten indexes of heads of households made for these state census records by their own volunteers many years ago, which are online at the Cattaraugus County Genweb site. (The indexes for 1855, 1865, and 1875 are complete, but we still need to finish the 1892 index.) To view the index for 1855, 1865, and 1875: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nycattar/census.htm#Top (Free) To view the actual census record after finding the surname and page number in the index: http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start (Free) Since we have not completed the 1892 indexes for all the towns, I am Cattaraugus county researchers willing to help us transcribe the rest of the old typewritten pages of names for the 1892 state census for Cattaruagus(ie, to digitize them) so we may add them to the other indexes at the Genweb site. It will help many people find their ancestors in the 1892 state census record for our county. It is simply a matter of typing the name, and a corresponding microfilm page number. If you are willing to join the census index party to help transcribe/digitize these old 1892 indexes, please contact me. At this point, we'll just try to finish the indexes for towns Allegany through Mansfield, which have their full census records at the LDS site, and we'll add the rest once LDS posts the remainder of the towns' census records (which hopefully will be soon.)
