You may be able to pick up clues from the 1865 New York State Census posted on the family search pilot site. You'll have to do a page by page search as there is no index but given you know the township it shouldn't be that many pages. I've found the New York State Census's to very valuable and really appreciate that family search has put them online http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=allCollections&r=0 Regards Susan Welch
Thanks Susan. Last night I was able to locate the 1865 census for Hinsdale (with the wonderful help of you folks on the Cattaraugus roots web site) and found the family which verified the 1860 census as the same family (Ferow/Fero). I am finding that the family search pilot site is a very valuable resource.
