    1. [NYCATTAR] Brooks
    2. Sue Wemett
    3. I am looking for information on the Brooks ancestry. My GGG-Grandmother was Elmyra Louise Brooks, poss. born May 6, 1833, poss. in Buffalo, Erie Co., NY. Elmyra had a twin brother Albert Brooks. Elmyra and Albert are the eldest children of 9 of Marsena Brooks & Sarah Boss Brooks. My found info states Marsena was poss. born in Boston, Mass. Here is found info: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nycattar/1879history/ashford.htm "THE HISTORY OF CATTARAUGUS COUNTY, NEW YORK" Town of Ashford "It was not until 1816 that any portion of the domain now included in the town of Ashford was contracted to actual settlers, but during that year, contracts were issued by the Holland Land Company to William and George SHULTIS, of Claverack, Columbia Co., N. Y., Andrew FRANK and David OYER, of Herkimer County, N. Y., and Benjamin RHODES and Marsena BROOKS. Marsena BROOKS, from Hampden County, NY did not settle in the town until about 1822. He remained till about 1829, when he removed to Ellicottville, and from thence to Ohio." "The first post-office established here was called West Valley, in honor of Mr. WEST. The first school-house erected here was in the summer of 1839, about 100 rods from the hotel. The first teacher was Juliet GIBSON. The jury list of Ellicottville for 1823 shows the names of those liable to jury duty who were residents within the portion of the town above referred to as part of the present town of Ashford, namely: Marsena BROOKS, farmer Charles BOSS, farmer Others...." The following names, taken from the assessment-roll of Ellicottville for 1822, are those of persons then occupying lands in that part of the town which is now included in Ashford: "Marsena BROOKS 53 5 6" http://www.paintedhills.org/CATTARAUGUS/Ellicottville1879Bios/Ellicottville1879Hist.htm History of Ellicottville, NY "It is related of Mrs. Orrin BROWN that in about 1820 or 1821, she went on horseback to visit Marsena BROOKS, who was a nephew and living in Ashford. " ~~ Carrie Belle [actually Carribel] Ives' ancestors were French Huguenots, the name originally St. Eives. Her maternal grandfather, Marsena Brooks, from Boston, married Sarah Boss of Albany, NY, settling in Ashtabula Co., Ohio. They had nine children, including Carrie Belle's [Carribel's] mother Elmyra Louise Brooks and her twin brother Alfred, who may have been born in Buffalo, NY on May 6, 1833. END In a note to me from my grandmother, she calls Elmyra, Elmyra Louisa Brooks, instead of Elmyra Louise Brooks. Marriage records show Elmyra Louise Brooks marrying Edwin Burke Ives, a prominent member of my paternal family, in Ashtabula, OH on May 5, 1852. Brooks and Ives families had both transplanted from the east to Ashtabula Co. and had lived there for a period of time. EB Ives & wife then moved from OH to Niles, MI where many generations of my paternal family did, and still do live. Extensive genealogy of the Ives family is available. I am also looking for more information on Elmyra's twin brother Albert Brooks, a middle name, wife and descendents, locations and death/cemetery information. Also seeking names of the other 7 Brooks siblings. Regards, Sue, Brockport, Monroe Co., NY

Author: LGG50 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.cattaraugus/10770.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Joan, The actual census records for towns N-Z are not uploaded yet by LDS to their pilot site, so South Valley is not there. But the index to the surnames for the 1892 census for South Valley is available. It will be placed on the Cattaraugus county Genweb soon. I checked this town's index and the surname DAY is found on page 1 of the 1892 state census for South Valley. If you'd prefer not to wait until LDS places the full census records of this town on their site, you could hire a researcher to pull the record for you in Cattaraugus County. If you'd like the full census index (surnames only) for South Valley for 1892, let me know and I'll email it to you. Laura PS - More town indexes for the 1892 state census will be added to the Cattaraugus County Genweb site very soon as we finish them (1855,1865, and 1875 are complete). Anyone willing to volunteer to help us complete the 1892 project would be very welcomed! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Clara Osterstock. I do not believe she was ever married to William. My Grandfathers death certificate lists his Mother (clara) as "Clara Unknown"..that's weird. I also have a photocopy of the obituary, "Shoeman"..it says she was the beloved wife of William Osterstuck (note the inconsistencies with the spelling)mother of Arthur G Bates, daughter of the late John Shoeman and Mrs. Caroline Huber (nee Weber). I'm confused, why would her mother have two maiden names? Could this be a re-marriage? I'll request that information. I haven't done the PA request yet. From what I've read in the request paperwork, I have to send them a photocopy of my drivers license for ID reasons. Anyhow, I've seen "Shoeman", "Schuman" and "Schumann" used in in investigation. I suspect I am related to the Almon Fuller line, and it would really help to compare DNA results with a known member of this line. This test, by the way, is very cheap now through Ancestry. You would have to fill out another NY State form (the same one you did for Arthur), but you need to send it to the City of Buffalo. The site on the NYS Department of Health will give you the address - it goes to the "Local Registrar" in Buffalo. Since you know the year of her death, it would be a simple search. You could put down the various spellings of her maiden name, and the two married names. Did your grandfather ever serve in the armed forces? That would be another source for you, if he did. 3. Doris - I can't thank you enough for responding! I'm going to scan the old typewritten pages for one of the towns, put them into a PDF file and email that to you so you can see what to retype into a computer. Then I'll send you a WORD file for that town with the first few names entered in, so you can see the format and just continue it. Thank you again, so much! I'll be back in touch in a day or so with the town to transcribe. In the meantime - which HALE are you looking for in Cattaraugus county? Give me a little info, and I'll check all the records I have on my computer to see if I spot anything for you. And what town do you think your gr grandfather might have lived in? (PS - I grew up by Marietta, Ohio - we now live in San Diego.) Soon after I received the results from NY Dept. of Vital Statistics, I posted a request for help in the PA section of this website. I have no ideas other than perhaps Arthur was born in PA and migrated to NY. I greatly appreciate the offer to help in Cattaraugus County. I thought about that as well. I emailed the county historian who was very pleasant and friendly. Unfortunately the results provided no positive information. Here is her reply and perhaps you can tell if your time and effort would be for naught in my situation: "I'm sorry to tell you that I have had very little luck finding information on Arthur George Bates of Clara Schuman. An obituary in the Ashford Gazette Newspaper dated April 6, 1902 listed George Bates died at the home of his son Lorenzo Bates, Tuesday, aged 71 years at East Otto, New York. I check the records on file at the Cattaraugus County Clerk's Office, Little Valley, New York. The marriage records for the entire county from 1905-1935 are on file. I didn't find any marriage records for Clara. The ones for Bates males were with women named Lucy and Alice. I also check the index in the miscellaneous ledgers and found no adoptions under either Bates or Schuman. I found a Lydia Bates, age 61 years, living in the Cattaraugus County Poorhouse, Machias, New York on the 1910 federal census for Cattaraugus County. She was still residing there on the 1915 New York State Census." Unfortunately none of those names were connected to my Bates. As mentioned above, I'm thinking about writing PA vital statistics and requesting the same info I did from NY. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
