ALLEN query I have a Catherine Marie ALLEN, said to be the daughter of Dave (David?) Lewis ALLEN and Catherine Ann WEBB (I am unsure of this, the research was done many years ago by a lady stating 'we' were related to Ethan ALLEN. Uh-huh, yeh :-D.) However, I do know, from her Civil Was pension application that Catherine Ann ALLEN was born 19 Mar 1842 in Allegheny, Cattaragus, NY. She was in Livingston Co, NY when she married 29 Sep 1862 she married Charles May LYON (no S, but LYONS are not exempt from consideration.) They had several children (9) in NY and PA before moving west c. 1880, via Nebraska, Montana and finally Washington state by 1910. This discussion is on the Steuben Co. list, but the LYONses were in Steuben Co. and I am exploring all ALLENs in the 'neighborhood' which may connect these two 'clusters'. So, with any due apologies, I am copying, in full the initial email and including Livingston and Cattaragus Co. lists. Thank you, JoAnn At 12:00 AM 2/15/2010, you wrote: >Today's Topics: > > 1. I am not related to this family, but some time ago a few photos of this family were auctioned on Ebay, and I saved copies of these 1800s photos shown in the Ebay description. One labeled photo is of four Smallman men: Joshua, Alfred, Edward, and Ephriam Smallman The photo looks to be taken during the 1880-90s. In addition, there is a labeled photo of an Agnes MacDougal Smallman, age 80 (this photo also appears to have been taken circa the 1880s-90s.). The third photo is of Ephriam Smallman alone. I can send you the JPGs of these photos if you'd like. How much information have able to find about William Smallman and Joshua Smallman? I'm a descendant of Joshua Smallman and trying to find out about his connection to a Edward Smallman and John Smallman. All three lived in New Haven, Connecticut at one point? Where about in Connecticut did your William live in? This is what I have. Joshua (b. 1819, Queen Co., Ireland)and John Smallman (b. abt 1830)came to New York City on the ship Henry Patrick on Dec 1, 1841. A few years after that, Joshua moved to New Haven. Not sure when John Smallman did; I found John in US census of 1870 in New Haven. Joshua joined the 20th infantry during the Civil War. After the war, he moved to Cattaraugus Co. Edward is a mystery to our family, the connection is unknown. He was born in 1840 and immigrated from same place as Joshua, in 1861. He also ended up in the New Haven and the 20th infantry. He also moved to cattaraugus Co. In fact, buried not far from Joshua's plot. His father was Richard, who died when he was around 4. Perhaps some of this information is new and can help you in your research. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Marriage info comes from an early Ellicottville paper, The Cattaraugus Republican dated Oct 16, 1862: "In this village on the 10th instant by Rev. W.V. Couch, Mr. H.K. Kittlemann of East Otto and Miss Kate M. Rupper of Mansfield." Catherine died in Mansfield, NY on Feb 25, 1930. Her death record is registered under Kate Kettleman. The record says she died of pneumonia. She was born Aug 7, 1844 in Germany and aged 83y2m2d at time of death. She was widowed by Henry Kettleman. Parents names stated as John Ruper and Dora Unknown. Buried in Otto, NY (no cemetery name was written), undertaker was R.H. Phillbrick. Informant was Dora E. Schuppenhauer of East Otto. The above mentioned informant, Dora Schuppenhauer, was a grandniece of Henry Kettleman. Henry and Catherine lived with the Schuppenhauers (his nephew's family) in the last few years of their lives. Catherine and Henry had some children but the only one I could find was Minnie (born 1874) but she disappears after 1880 census. I couldn't find anything on the sister, Dora Ruper. She didn't marry a Westfall though. That would be a differant Dora entirely. I checked the old records for the Lutheran church that used to be in Plato and couldn't find anything on any of your family. Perhaps they went to the one in Otto. I did check state census and found the Rupers: 1855 East Otto, NY Roper, John, 40, Germany, farmer Roper, Dora, 40 wife, Germany Roper, Elizabeth, 12 dau., Germany Roper, Catherine, 7 dau., Germany Hier, Mina, 7 dau., Germany Roper, Dora, 5 dau., Germany (for Mina, the words Hier and Roper were written over each other) 1865 Ellicottville Rouper, John, 49, 2 marriages, Germany, farmer Rouper, Dora, 49, wife, 2 marriages, 6 children, Germany Hyer, Minna, 19, step dau., Germany Ostrander, James, 6, adopted son, NY (Cattaraugus County) 1875 Ashford Rooper, John, 50, Germany, farmer Rooper, Dora, 50, wife, Germany Nail, Carl, 32, Germany, farm labor Nail, Minnie, 29, wife, Germany Nail, John, 3, son, Germany Nail, Mary, 2, dau., NY (Cattaraugus County) Nail, Sophia, 70, Mother, Germany, widow (the name "Nail" is actually a misspelling of Nagel.)
