She was born in New York about 1824 and married Truman Merchant in probably 1844/44. The 1860 Census shows a William Bigler, age 27, living in the Merchant household. The 1850 Census shows a Phillip Bigler, age 56 in Little Valley. Do church records exist for the Baptist Church or the West Perrysburg M.E. Church, as they were organized at the same time as the Bible was signed? I understand that it was 200 years ago and I have a 2% chance, but I have to ask anyway. The name in the Bible is A. J. Perkins, whom I believe is the son of Daniel Perkins who was living in Perrysburg in 1820. There is also an Eli Perkins, but he and Daniel are not related. ----- Original Message ----- From: fredandjp@aol.com To: nycattar@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, March 27, 2010 7:33:57 PM GMT -06:00 US/Canada Central Subject: [NYCATTAR] Church Histories of Perrysburg What is the name inside the bible? Look in The History of Cattaraugus County. It has the histories of the towns and their churches. Allan Campbell In a message dated 3/26/2010 5:14:36 A.M. Author: swemett Surnames: Brooks Classification: queries Hi- I haven't posted a query in a while and have more info than previously so I'm reposting: Seeking info on Family of Marcena/Marsena Brooks, b.1789 Mass. son of Sylvanus/Polly Brooks, m. Sarah Boss Children: Eaton J. b.1825 Alvin M. b.c. 1827 Patterson N. or H. b.c.1829 Almira Louise, my gg-grandmother b.5/6/1833 Erie or Genesee Co., NY Alfred N. b.c.1834 Erie or Genesee Co., NY My ggg-grandfather Marcena Brooks is the BROTHER of Edward Brooks m. Orange Hitchcock, PARENTS of Marcena Brooks b.c.1813 m. Anna Minerva. Marcena/Anna Minerva remained in Cattaraugus Co. for life and appear to have been upstanding citizens. Marcena/Sarah & family moved north to Erie/Genesee Co. before 1833 when Almira & Alfred were born in Upstate, NY. Family later moved west to settle in Ashtabula Co., OH. I have collected online the following on Marcena (the elder): Bio from: Historical Gazetteer and Biographical Memorial of Cattaraugus Co. NY, ed by William Adams, pub 1893, History of the Town of Ashford - Chapter XIX (19), Page 455 Surnames: FOX, BROOKS Javan FOX removed from Fabius, N.Y., to Ashford in 1825 and purchased of his uncle, Marsena BROOKS, the farm where George O. FOX now lives. He cultivated his large farm and was a teamster between Buffalo and Ellicottville. He was employed to haul the lime for the county buildings in Ellicottville; he dealt in flour and salt and later was a merchant several years. ======================== Orrin and Archelaus BROWN, from Massachusetts, located land and took a contract in 1813, and in 1816 or 1817, settled on lot 27. It is related of Mrs. Orrin BROWN that in about 1820 or 1821, she went on horseback to visit Marsena BROOKS, who was a nephew and living in Ashford. The route she traveled was the old Shultis road. On her return, after a visit of a day or two, she started in the afternoon, having sufficient time to reach home before dark. On getting part way down, she came to a point where two roads diverged; she took one of them and traveled some time, finally coming back to the same place she started from. Night was then fast approaching, and rather than wander aimlessly in the woods, she tied her horse to a tree and lay down to pass the night. As soon as the first ray of light appeared in the east, she mounted the old mare, gave he the reins, and she soon brought her safely home. The road she had followed was a log road leading out into the woods. In 1830, Orrin BROWN sold to Ensign LITCHFIELD 78 acres of lot No. 62. He emigrated from Massachusetts with his wife and eight children. His son Beals lives on the homestead. Levi lives in the village of Ellicottville. Polly married Miller VAUGHAN, who settled in Somerville Valley about that time, where their son, Frederick VAUGHAN, resides. ======================== http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nycattar/1879history/ashford.htm "THE HISTORY OF CATTARAUGUS COUNTY, NEW YORK" Town of Ashford It was not until 1816 that any portion of the domain now included in the town of Ashford was contracted to actual settlers, but during that year, contracts were issued by the Holland Land Company to William and George SHULTIS, of Claverack, Columbia Co., N. Several other states have done this and the index gives no more information than the SSDI already does. We've been paying 22 dollars per record for quite some time now and I think they've made enough to attempt a project like the digitization of the index. As always we can have more of an impact on our representatives with larger numbers so I would truly love it if my fellow NYS Genealogists wrote in to their representatives as well.
