You may be able to pick up clues from the 1865 New York State Census posted on the family search pilot site. You'll have to do a page by page search as there is no index but given you know the township it shouldn't be that many pages. I've found the New York State Census's to very valuable and really appreciate that family search has put them online http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=allCollections&r=0 Regards Susan Welch
Thanks Susan. Last night I was able to locate the 1865 census for Hinsdale (with the wonderful help of you folks on the Cattaraugus roots web site) and found the family which verified the 1860 census as the same family (Ferow/Fero). I am finding that the family search pilot site is a very valuable resource. According to Ancestry.com index, the last name is Ferone. Looking at it on Heritage Quest, I don't read it like that, but am not sure what it could be. John is age 37, Caroline is age 24, John is age 8, Mary J. is age 6 and Julia is age 4. They were all born in NY. I can't read what his occupation is either. Try to find them in 1870? Good luck, Joann Nichols Terry Hickman wrote: > I have found a source that says my ancestor (Julia Ferrow/Fero) is in the > 1860 census for Hinsdale, Cattaraugus, NY on page 48, family # 391. I have found a source that says my ancestor (Julia Ferrow/Fero) is in the 1860 census for Hinsdale, Cattaraugus, NY on page 48, family # 391. I have looked in ancestry.com but the page is so light most names are not legible. Does anyone have a record of this page and could tell me the names of the family (the Father's first name is visible as John age, 37), ages and birthplaces, etc. Thanks. -- Terry J. HASKINS. He "appears" in the 1850 federal census in New Albion village, Cattaraugus Co., NY. He is a blacksmith and his origins are unknown. He has recently married RUENAH ARRANTS, a daughter of local farmer and my gggg-grandfather JAMES ARRANTS (later ARNCE) and wife ELIZABETH DREW. Horace and Ruenah have recently married and have a son James (6 mos.). James is listed in the 1830 and 1840 federal censuses as farming in Napoli and Coldsprings Townships (township name change but not the farm location). James brother William died in the fall of 1849, and James obtained guardianship of William's sons Thomas, James, and William. Horace co-signed a guardianship bond with James and William Curtis. William Arrants' daughter Sarah Ann went to live with her sister Experience and her husband William Curtis in Cattaraugus Co. Horace and Ruenah removed to Saginaw, Michigan about 1858, with children Aris R. (1850) [my gg-grandfather], Eavis (1853), and Susana (1848) [adopted ??]. Daughter Sarah is born in Michigan in 1859.
