They are on top ot the hill by the fence and their marker is a tall one. I have quite a bit of information that I believe connects John to Dan A. Monroe. They were from CT. You've heard the same story that I have about the black edged letter that the family received. That story was being told today. I just left a Bly reunion in Spring Valley. How are you connected to the Monroes? I am connected through Elvira Olida Monroe who married John Rathbun. I'm away from home right now but will send you everything that I've collected on the family if you want it. I found the census records for John and Roxy in Ohio and also in Illinois. John was living by his brother, Andrew. My e-mail is olelena@brainerd.net. Maggie

No luck so far - will have to get back to her to get first name of the one and only Nudd to migrate to Allegany, NY.

Surnames: Preston Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RRB.2ACE/5882 Message Board Post: I'm looking for any information about Nathan Preston, husband of Hannah Garnett Preston, who moved to what is now the Olean area in October 1854. A recently discovered letter, written by Nathan's granddaughter, states: "they left Maine and came to New York and settled on a farm there in the southwestern part of the state - the city of Olean & vicinity is situated where it was located. Our grandparents lived there on a wooded homestead - then new country - until he broke his leg - and thru the ignorance of a Dr., died under an opiate when it was set in place. Grandmother was left with 12 children….” We know that the family was in Potter County, PA at the time of the 1860 census. Where could I find information about Nathan's burial place and/or date of death? Was there an 1855 state census that might include the family? Are there land records that might show land they owned?
Is there anyone who would be willing to check the Ischua, NY newspapers for an obituary that was published soon after 16 Nov 1895, the date of death for JOHN WHEELER? I will be more than happy to pay any costs or fees associated with finding this obit. I have a copy of it, but it does not show the source. Although he died in New Hudson, Allegany County, several of his children lived in Ischua, so the obituary may have been published there. I desperately need a copy of the obit complete with the masthead for the newspaper, if at all possible. The text of the obit follows: "The death of Mr. John Wheeler of New Hudson, occured(sic) at his home last Saturday morning after an illness of about two weeks. Deceased was born August 16, 1820, at Bath, this state, and in 1829 moved with his parents to Ischua. March 27, 1851, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Laura Stone, and began housekeeping on the farm where he passed forty-five years of his life, and where he died. He was a man of exemplary habits, a good neighbor, a devoted husband and a most kind and indulgent parent. Death had no terrors for him, and he was perfectly resigned to go. Looking up to his weeping wife and children, a few moments before he breathed his last, he said, "I am going to leave you -- going away over Jordan." Besides the widow, six children mourn his loss, Frank and Fred of Cuba, Mrs. John Hackett of Ischua, Arthur Wheeler of New Hudson, Charles Wheeler of Lyndon and Mrs. Helen Randolph of Toledo, O. For nearly fifty years he was a member of the Baptist church. His funeral was held at his late home, Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock, Rev. D. H. Denison officiating." Many thanks for any help. Doris Wheeler [When replying, please keep the conversation thread attached.]

But I ran across your message about Swarthouts from Cattaraugus county NY, and I have confirmation that is where my ancestors can from. My g-grandfather John, wife Emma, and my grandfather William H., Rosa and Julia came from Mansfield in Cattaraugus Co. to Jackson, Michigan around 1890. John died in Horton, Michigan in 1902 at his sisters house, a Mrs. Aldrich. John's parents were James S. and Katherine (Waller), born in NY state. There was a 4th child, unknown, most likely the oldest from a previous marriage. John was 17 years older than Emma and I have no trace of Emma, Rosa or Julia. William, my grandfather, and his wife Emma, had 5 children. William, Jr., Viola, Florence, Margaret and my dad Bernard, all from Michigan except Florence who lived and died in Baltimore. If any of this matches what you have I would be extremely interested in your response.
