    1. [NYCATTAR] Seek Winney's of New York
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Winney, Winnie Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RRB.2ACE/6021 Message Board Post: I am seeking the Winneys of New York to find out where my GGGGrandfather William J. Winney began his journey from New York to possibly Missouri to Grant Co., WI where he fathered his first child. So far I have found Abner Levi Winney was born in in Apor of 1890 of Cold Spring, Alleg. Indian Reservation, Cattaraugus, NY; his parents were Oscar Snyder and Cordelia Jimeson. How could the son have a surname that was different from his parents? And I am most interested in this Winney because my GGrandmother Anna Winney Spencer was "part-Indian." Then I have found an Adrian Winney, b. 01 Jul 1787 Saint Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Schoharie, Schoharie, New York. His father was Benjamin Winney. In Schoharie, NY there was an Adam B. Vrooman Winney born on 10 Oct 1813. In Albany, Albany, NY there was a christening of Adam C. WInney on 12 Jan 1724. Also in New York-- but of Shuylerville, Saratoga-- there was an Adelaide Winney who married Charles Slocum in 1865. Adelaide's father was John B. Winney. Abbie Winnie was born in 1826 and married George F. Beardsely of Vermont; their marriage took place in 1846. Another Abby Winney married Orsemus Vandervort, both of Dutchess, New York. A. Winney was married ca. 1818 in Bethlehem, Albany, New York. He was born there in 1794. There was a Henry Winney in the City Directory of Auburn, New York. Amos Henry Winney, b. 31 Jul 1906 Millbrook, Mecosta, MI; his burial was in July of 1937 at the Salt River Cemetery, Shepherd, Michigan. His father was Andrew Jackson Winney, one of twins. I am especially interested in Amos Henry Winney because my GGGrandfather's middle name was Henry-- William Henry Winney. There was a Wallace W. Winnie household where the father was born in Ohio, the first daughter was born in Ohio but the last two children were born in Iowa-- the place where my GGGrandfather William Henry Winney ended up living. I am seeking my Winney family, especially to find out if they were the contruting factor that cause my GGrandmother Anna Winney Spencer to be "part-Indian." She was born in Wisconsin but lived for most of her adult life in Osceola Co., IA. Thank you for any information! Kathleen LPurch6636@aol.com

    1. [NYCATTAR] Freedom of Information Records Retrieval Assistance
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RRB.2ACE/6020 Message Board Post: Hi fellow genealogists! I’m a genealogist just like you are. This is kind of long, but well worth reading! I found a way to use FOIA in genealogy to request records that actually results in moving your search along. In my every day professional work I use the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) to acquire records from all areas. The FOIA is a tool that is available to everyone. The request is free but it can be very confusing. You have to know where to send it, you have to have the right request form, a properly worded letter, you have to know what type of information they need to get you what you are looking for. You cannot just send in a generic "find this" request. Using the proper request, the proper form, a properly worded letter you will get the documentation you are seeking. I received 84 pages in the first probate request, two weeks later, an additional 124 pages. All stuff they copied from microfiche. At $ .10 per page. Some of these re! cords went back to 1838. I will send you the forms (both State and Federal), the request letter, what you need to send them in terms of specifics, if you have them, or if not, where and how to find them. I have compiled a list of each State’s statutes and codes that you will need to reformat the request form for your particular State or the State you are sending the request to. I have included some specific searching directions and examples that may help you. For those of us who have been unable to get to an out-of-town location or to afford a researcher it's great. My email is genealogyprincess@hotmail.com or klawler@batorberlin.com. Please only use these for responses. I’ll be happy to answer questions! I will be happy to help anyone with any additional information or reformatting the forms for other states, other data requests, etc. Any other requests for help, I will send a form. I am requesting $6.58 for paper, copying, assembly, large envelope, and postage costs. This package of information is 22+ pages (and growing) -- and I had no idea this would be responded to in such huge numbers (!!). So, if you’re interested, send $6.58, personal check is ok, [Kathy Lawler] to Genealogy Princess, 20757 Camden Square, #210, Lathrup Village, MI 48076 or use my Paypal address [checking] for $7.00 to Genealogyprincess2000@yahoo.com. Either way, don’t forget your address!! I will send you the information the very day I receive your address and funds. Lastly, additional information, new ways I can come up with to use FOIA will be sent to you free of charge and I’ll also be happy to answer any questions you may have. This is strictly to get you! information that will help you gather documents and information to further your search for your ancestors. Thanks! Kathleen Lawler
