I am a genealogy researcher who charges $10 per hour, and could possible help you get back an additional generatioin or two with the help of census records, probate records and naturalization records. Anthony Caswell was about 13 years older than Sylvanus. One minor corection: Sylvanus was born in NY. The only information on his parents, the 1880 census information on birth place of parents, shows Sylvanus' parents as being born in England. The information on Anthony Caswell indicates that his parents and grandparents were born in RI. That would be inconsistent with the little information available on Sylvanus' parents. I will be certain to let you know anything else I discover about Sylvanus Caswell.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/RRB.2ACE/6044.1 Message Board Post: There is no mention of Sylvanus in the Hinsdale section of "The History of Cattaraugus Co" by Adams. I would guess this is because his line did not remain there very long. The NYS Statistical Census for Hinsdale in 1835 does not list Sylvanus either. (I have the microfilm). It does list Anthony CASWELL (2M, 2F). He is the earliest of the "local" CASWELLs and I have the bulk of his descendants. He was b 1797 and his parents were Allen and Elizabeth (SHEARMAN) CASWELL of Hopkinton, RI. Having 2 CASWELL males in Hinsdale that early in the 1800s is a strong hint that they are related although you indicated Sylvanus was b in England. The will of Allen dated 28 Jan 1833 (RI Geno. Reg vol 7, pg 159) lists Anthony, Lloyd, Allen Jr. and Hannah. I'll keep your query in mind the next time I go to the county seat (Little Valley) although I doubt if there will be much due the short time Sylvanus was in this area. If you should find a connection to Anthony, I'd appreciate knowing it. Of course, I'll let you know if something turns up here. Regards, Sid Emmons,Historian,Town of Lyndon,Catt Co.,NY

CASWELL, born New York about 1810. The 1830 census shows him by himself living in Hinsdale, Cattaraugus Co., NY. The 1835 state census index for Cattaraugus is only partially available on the web. Sylvanus's parents, names unknown, were probably born in England. Some time before 1841, Sylvanus married Catherine Margaret "Maggie" SCHULER, born Nov. 1820, Wuerttemberg, Germany; immigrated 1831; parents Andrew and Margaret Schuler, b. Germany about 1791 and 1785 respectfully. In 1850, the Schulers lived with the Caswells in Illinois. There are a number of Caswells in Cattaraugus in the era, but I have not been able to link Sylvanus to any of them. I would appreciate any help whatsoever.

Does anyone have any clue to these two girls parents? This information can be found by doing a search of census records on the LDS family search web site, under 1880 census records.
