Surnames: Nichols Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RRB.2ACE/6064.1 Message Board Post: The following information is from The History of Ischua by the late Sally Squire Pettengill, pps. 36 and 37: Richmond Steven Nichols (b. 1832-d. 1916), a son of James and Mary (Polly) Ireland Nichols, came to Ischua, N.Y., from Bainbridge, Chenango Co., N.Y. in 1867. He became a farmer for a few years, then opened a hotel in 1876. In 1878 he built the Nichols House hotel on Mill Street. It was built next to the original railroad depot and catered to train travelers. The hotel had a bar, where only men were allowed, and a dining room with a large dining-room table where all the guests ate together. The kitchen and pantry were in the back and the rooms for overnight guests were upstairs. The family lived downstairs, a side porch extending off their living quarters. On a Sunday afternoon, the dining room was often frequented by the people of Ischua who came for Sunday dinner. Richmond loved to play cards. Solitaire was a favorite of his, or he and some of ! his cronies could be found gathered around a round card table any time of the day or evening, testing each other's skills at poker, with a big brass spittoon in proximity. These were the days of tobacco chewing, and the conversation was either interrupted or accented by a slight "ping" as a bit of "spit" was aimed and found its target. Many of the "genteel" ladies of the day didn't approve of this habit, but this was a part of the men's world at that time. During some of the years of its existence, square dances were held at the hotel. Richmond's granddaughter, Maxine Nichols Fancher, remembered one particular dance called "The Basket Weave", where the men interlocked arms with the ladies and swung them right off their feet. In a young girl's eyes, it all seemed very rough and noisy;bodies were twirling everywhere! She said she often wondered how the ladies survived the dance! Raymond S. Nichols married, first, Eliza Pike (b. 1839-d. 1870) They had no children! . His children by his second wife, Sarah E. (Nellie) Wickwire (b. 1852 - d. 1884) were Charles Blake (b. 1873 - d. 1939); Grace Blanche (b. 1874 - d. 1943) who married George Allison, M.D.; and Robert Ray (b. 1880 - d. 1918). Flora Gilbert (b. 1865 in Akron, Ohio), the daughter of John and Mary Gilbert, became Richmond's third wife in 1885. She helped him run the hotel and continued to run it after his death with the help of her stepson, Charles. She also took care of her blind sister, Maude, who lived with her. Flo later married Henry Lapp and the hotel was sold. She died in 1938; Henry in 1950 at the age of 79, and they're buried in the Ischua Village Cemetery. Richmond and his first two wives are also buried there, but there's no tombstone marking his grave. The oldest son, Charles B. Nichols, married Adeline Clayson (b. 1879 - d. 1960), a daughter of Thomas and Mary Thomas Clayson. He was Supervisor of Ischua from 1905 to 1915 and became Cattaraugus C! ounty Sheriff about 1916. He and Addie eventually left Ischua and moved to Los Angeles, California, where he is buried in the Veterans National Cemetery. He was a Spanish American War veteran. Addie is buried in Cuba, N.Y. The youngest son, Robert R. Nichols, married Arlene Elliott (b. 1880 - d. 1918), the daughter of George and Margaret Hamilton (or Hambleton) Elliott of Ischua, and had two children: Maxine (b. 1912 - d. 1984), who married Lester Fancher and lived in California, and Ruth (b. 1915), who married, first, Michael Koziar and second, George Janesick.

There is a stone for Laban LEWIS in the Sandusky, Cattaruagus Co., cemetery. There is no date of death on it. Here is a copy of the information I sent to a friend who is also interested in the family of Laban LEWIS. I also forwarded your post to my friend. Hope this is helpful. (Oct. 2000) While perusing the Wyoming Co. Herald at the Arcade (Wyoming Co. NY) library last week, I came across the following, which I thought might be of some interest to you ;>). Also took some pictures at the cemetery. I dropped off a roll at Sam's on my way home this afternoon, and I have more still in my camera. If the library had a reader/printer I would have made you a copy of the obit, but unfortunately, they did not. In fact, the reader was relegated to an out of the way spot to make room for computers and had only the desk space the reader itself occupied. I did find what I was looking for, which was the wedding announcement of my great grandmother's brother, Freeman Howlett. Barbara WYOMING COUNTY HERALD, THURSDAY, MAY 16, 1907 (Wyoming Co., NY) front page William Frank Lewis died at his home in Arcade, May 7th, 1907, aged 71 years, 7 months and 8 days. He was the son of Laban Lewis and Sarah Tarble Lewis, and born at Freedom October 15th, 1835. He was the youngest of a family of fifteen children, all but two of whom; Mrs. Jane Austin of Farmersville and Mrs. Calista Wilder of Detroit, Mich., having preceeded him to the other land. His parents were born in New England and his father served with distinction in the war of 1812, afterwards coming to Western New York in ox carts and locating in the town of Freedom. On October 15, 1861, he was united in marriage to Clarinda M. Wilson of Freedom, to whom were born six children, Wilson E., Fred H., Addie E., Rena, W. Frank and Lulu M. all of whom survive him and were with him to minister to the last wants of a kind and loving father. He resided for some time in the town of Eagle, coming to Arcade about twenty five years ago, where the remainder of his life has been spent, and where he has been held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. He was a man of strict integrity and honorable in all his dealings. His wife died April 6, 1890, and he later married Mrs. Rosalind Weir of Arcade, who also survives him, and was able to be with and care for him in his last illness, which lasted four months. The funeral was held from the home on Liberty street on Thursday, May 9th, Rev. H.L. Holmes, pastor of the M.E. Church officiating. He was buried in the family plot at Sandusky beside the wife of his youth, father, brother and sister. His brother was laid in the first grave in the Sandusky cemetery. FLAMES Folks, you don't know how it pains me to have to revisit this issue. That the primary purpose of this list is Genealogy. We would do well to stick to that. However, I do understand that occasionally there are conflicts of opinions on many issues in the genealogy field. For the most part, this is acceptable, as long as the discussion is respectful, mindful of the feelings of others, stays "on point", and is conducted in a friendly manner. I will tolerate such discussions on this list as long as they remain objective and, in my opinion, are not offensive to other subscribers. If you have doubts about what you are about to post being acceptable, then you probably should sleep on it a night or two before posting. What I will not tolerate, is derisive, or negative remarks that are directed specifically to, or about, a individual. If someone posts such a message, I can't undo their post. I can't un-ring a bell. . But what I can,....... and will do......., is put anyone who engages in disruptive activity on a "monitor" status. I will review any post they make before their messages are released to the list. Repeat offenders will be unsubscribed. COMMERCIAL ADVERTISEMENTS First, let me state that if you feel that a post is inappropriate on this list, I would appreciate it if you email me, rather than posting a comment on the list. I will review it and respond to you directly. Because this issue seems to be a repeated topic of discussion, I will post what my criteria are in deciding what is, and what is not a commercial advertisement. I will do this within the next day or two, most likely on this list, as well as on our NYCATTAR web site, and in the LINKS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS link on the Cattaraugus Message Board. I invite you to email me directly with any comments on these or any other issues about this LIST or the MESSAGE BOARDS that concern you. Dick Allen List Administrator email: nycattar@rochester.rr.com

I am seeking information on various HENDERSON families and their descendants from CATTARAUGUS CO, NY. I am specifically looking for information on a WILLIAM R. HENDERSON,M.D.. He was the son of William H. Henderson, a prominent lawyer from Randolph. William R.'s name is given on the "Very Tall" monument of William H. Henderson in the Randolph Cemetery. The Soundex of 1900 lists William R. Henderson as a resident of Buffalo b March 1866, his wife is listed as Isabel,) TORRANCE) a daughter Dorothy b April 1890 and a son Duncan R. b Jan 1895. William R.was said to be a M.D. in Buffalo, NY. His son, Duncan R. apparently died in 1906 and is buried in a plot next to the large monument of his grandfather, and father. Several Henderson's apparently lived in the area of New Albion, Cattaraugus and Randolph. I have located burials in the Tug Hill, Cattaraugus and the Randolph Cemeteries. Any information on members of these families would be helpful! Does anyone have access or know where I can get access to obituaries of persons buried in any of these cemeteries? Maybe the obituaries would give a clue as to descendants, etc. John M. Henderson terriandjohn@MCTtelecom.com
