Heading: Death of a Bridegroom Subheading: Alvin Hammann's Burial Day just four weeks after his Wedding Day "Less than a month ago we published in these colums the marriage notice of Mr. Alvin Hammann and Miss Flossie Robinson, both of this town. To-day we publish the death notice of the young bridegroom, who was but 23 years old. A little more than a week ago Mr. Hammann was stricken with the measles, which disease has been prevalent in the west end of town lately. Although young and seemingly robust, he was unable to withstand the ravages of the disease and on Monday morning consternation was written on his face when the announcement came that 'Alvain Hamman is dead'. The young man was the son of Mr. Wm. Hammann and most of his life had passed in this immediate vicinity. As stated above, less than a month ago, he had begun the foundation of a home by taking as his wife the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Robinson. We can imagine that many plans had been made for the future by this young bride and groom, for whom the honeymoon had not begun to wane. But his sudden snatching away is but another reminder that death is no respector of persons and 'while the old must die, the young may die.' A doubly sad feature is the fact that the young bride is also lying very ill with measles, and as we go to press, we learn that two more of this family are stricken, namely, Mrs. Geo. Robinson and a younger daughter, Mr. Hamann, his father, is also confined to his bed with illness. The deceased leaves a father, two brothers and four sisters, his mother having died several years ago. The funeral was held Wednesday, Feb. 27, just exactly four weeks from his wedding day. The services occurred at McKinstry, Rev. Tubbs, of East Ashford (who was also the clergyman who performed the marriage ceremony) officiating. Internment at McKinstry. The family are greatly afflicted and the sympathy of all goes out to them." Susan Stahley rsm.stahley@verizon.net Professional Genealogist http://www1.cedar-rapids.net/page/brickwall/
Obit notices like this one sometimes prove to be extremely helpful in providing that one elusive clue when one is searching for long-lost ancestors. Look, for instance, at all the names provided in the list of those who attended the funeral of this person. :) LL ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susan Stahley" <rsm.stahley@verizon.net> To: <NYCATTAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 15, 2003 10:19 AM Subject: [NYCATTAR] John G. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Hammann have been residents of this town for a good many years and Harvey was one of seven children, three boys and four girls. His boyhood was spent on Blue Hill where from a child he was well liked and made many friends who were his friends to the end. He has grown up among us where we have all had the privilege of knowing him and there is not one who can say he was guilty of one mean unkind act intentionally. All the way up from childhood he kept himself clean from bad habits and there was not one who knew that did not esteem him highly. A few years ago he came to Delevan and learned the cheesemakers trade at which he continued to work up to the time he was taken sick. Though his comparative brief illness everything was done for him which loving hands could accomplish or medical science could suggest but it was all in vain and on Sunday, September 6th, he quietly and peacefully laid aside lifes burdens and passed beyond that great divide where trouble is a thing forgotten. Besides his loving and kind perante he leaves five sisters and one brother, Addie and L. Ruth Hammann; Mrs. David Hayse; Mrs. Frank Hesley of this place and Mrs. Charles Folts of Springville, besides one brother Alfred Hammann of East Shelby, N. Y., his other brother died a little over a year ago. Too much cannot be said of Harvey's good qualities and stirling worth and his death has cast a shadow of gloom over the entire community." Obituary found in scrapbook. No date or newspaper name found. "The funeral for Miss Iva Bremillre was held on Sunday at West Valley. The death of such a lovely and estimable young lady through long feared was a great shock to all. Deep and heartfelt sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents, brothers and one surviving sister. One sister, Mable dying a few years ago with the same dread disease tuberculosis, after reaching young ladyhood. Everything that love could suggest had been tried for Miss Iva, having spent some time in the Adirondacks where her health was much improved and in coming back had found employment at Perrysburg while living under the sanitary regulations there. Last December physicians gave up the hope of her recovery and she came home to spend her remaining days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Bremiller, where her death occurred." This is from a newspaper clipping. There is no date on the clipping, but the headline is "Machias on the Map Again". "Our fellow townspeople, Mr. and Mrs. Lee L. Steffenhagen, have put Machias on the map again and have done themselves proud as well. Last week, Thursday there was born to them, not simply a boy, but three of them, triplets, a whole crowd, you see, and a somewhat noisy one at that." "Later:-- We regret to state that the oldest one of this interesting little trio died on Friday, July 28" Susan Stahley rsm.stahley@verizon.net Professional Genealogist http://www1.cedar-rapids.net/page/brickwall/
This is handwritten in the front of a scrapbook donated to a local family history center: Mary Pixley Death has again visited our home and taken Mary, the eldest daughter of Hiram Pixley. She was born April 18, 1891, and died Nov. 15, 1908, making her a little over 17 years of age. Mary was never strong, but everything that loving hands could do was done. She bore her sufferings patiently, and never complained and her bright, amiable disposition made her many warm friends. She leaves to mourn her loss her father and two sisters, Hazel and Florence. Services were held in the M. E. church at Delevan Nov. 16. Rev Tubbs officiating. This bereavement in doubly sad, as her mother died a few weeks before.
