He had been insane at times for nearly forty years having been committed to State Institutions seven times during those years. The cause of his trouble was thought to have been an injury by a horse when a young man. When well he was a pleasant agreeable man, and always peaceful and an excellent worker. He was twice married, first to Miss Schultes, by whom he had one son, and later to Mrs. Ava Bond by whom he had two daugthers, all of whom are now living. He was a brother of Mr. Marion Mathewson and Mr. Henry Mathewson of Riceville and another brother and two sisters in the West. On Thursday night he went went out to swim as he had done often this summer. He removed his clothing except his heavy socks and stockings. This may have been the cause of his drowing. Funeral services at East Ashford, Sunday. Rev. Hill officiating."

She had not been perfectly well for a few weeks but not a thought of this sudden termination was entertained by her family. For the second time this spring she went in the stable to help her aged husband about the milking. Soon she was seized with a faintness and her husband started to assist her to the house. Before reaching there, however, she collapsed dying in his arms. The Health Officer, Dr. Fish, was called, who gave the necessary permit for burial. Funeral arrangements were in the hands of Undertaker W. H. Proctor. Internment in St. John's R. C. cemetery on Tuesday. Annie Marie Zeffers was born at Ashford on Nov. 13th, 1852 to Martin Zeffers and Katherine KlaussZeffers, and spent her whole life near the place of her birth. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RRB.2ACE/1358.1578.2078.2 Message Board Post: Barb: >From what I can figure out, Alden Lebarron and a large number of his children (including all his sons - Joseph, Alden Jr., James & Lathrop) moved to Cattaraugus county around 1836. Assuming that none Alden's siblings moved with him (and that is just an assumption), I have information on the children of all but James, and the two names in question are not among that info. The conclusion is that these would be James' children. By the way, I just got copies of Alden and Alden Jr.'s wills. The one for Alden Sr. is very interesting. It was written two weeks before his death and pretty much takes everything from Alden Jr and gives it to James. This must have caused a big fight because the will was contested and the transcript also includes testimony from witnesses about Alden's competency at the time the will was written. It was finally upheld. Of special interest to me was a comment about Alden's grandson Charles Lathrop (my ancestor). Seems Grandpa was going to leave him $5 in the will, and when the man transcribing asked why he wasn't getting $50 like everyone else, Alden said, "he's a bad boy and won't do as I tell him." (Not too uncommon for a fatherless 15 year old boy.) Alden finally grudgingly agreed to give him the $50 dollars. I'll go back and read through the will and see if I can find the names anywhere in the small print. When I first read through it, I was only looking for my direct line. Jim

I think it is terrific that someone is posting obits and other items. My husband's family is from Freedom-Elton-Delevan-Yorkshire and the surrounding area. We search Browns-Converses-Hancocks and multiple others, living there from 1820 to 1900; we also know relatives way beyond that date. Little items like obituaries, telling who came, who is in the family, etc. are how you link people. A relative sent us an obituary from PA, and it led us to a family bible. A recent posting, about Janette Chaney (Cheney ?) is one I will have to search my files about. We have Cheneys and Browns; she may belong in some way; I also printed it for the cousin in PA and forwared to one in MN. Genealogy is a search. If someone posts and you don't like it, don't read it. I would be delighted if the old churches had ledgers - they often went with the pastors. This is not offensive material; if you don't want to read, delete. You may have lost a link to your past though. Judy schwanja723@aol.com
Hi, I would like to thank you for posting this information, and ask our list members if they have any knowledge of who this "Mrs. Mary Worden, of this place" might have been. My ancestors, John Worden and Esther (Whiting) Worden were residing in Yorkshire, Cattaraugus County, NY in the 1850 census with their Worden children. By 1855, the family seems to have split up, as the children are living in homes of friends and relatives, with no sign of John Worden or his wife Esther (Whiting) Worden. Likewise, the two youngest children in this family are missing in the Yorkshire census. I now realize that Esther Worden apparently married a Clark(e) man (possibly in/near Yorkshire) sometime after that 1850 census, and before 1 April 1855, as I have found a marriage certificate for "Widow" Esther Clark(e) and Richard B. Nuzum in Marion County, Virginia (now West Virginia). The 1860 census shows Richard Nuzum and his bride Esther (Whiting) Worden Nuzum and her two small Worden children using the Clark(e) surname, in Marion County, Virginia (WV). I presume Esther might have married the Clarke man in/near Yorkshire, but his job took the new family to Marion County, VA where he apparently died. To make life a bit more interesting, I have found one John Worden in the 1860 and 1870 census in Orangeville, Barry County, Michigan. (He died there in 1872.) His death certificate says he was born 1808 Chautauqua County, NY, which is coincidentally, where I first find my John Worden and new bride, Esther (Whiting) Worden (Hanover and then Poland, Chautuaqua County) prior to their bringing their growing family to Yorkshire, Cattaraugus County. The 1850 census gives my John Worden's age as 42 and born in NY, so this does fit with the info on the death certificate for the John Worden who died in Barry County, Michigan. If anyone has any Worden ancestors in Cattaraugus County, I would be interested in hearing from you. In keeping with my previous inquiry to this list, I'm attempting to figure out how my Swedish immigrant great grandfather worked as a stone mason in the Carrollton area. I found him and his family listed in the 1892 census, where he indicated he was a stone mason as an occupation. Would anyone be able to offer me information as to a book that is available that reports on the history of Carrollton during that time frame, focusing on construction in that area be it building homes, bridges, etc? I'd appreciate any help you may be able to offer me. Sharon, Mn.

Funeral services at the home on Saturday, Feb. 1st. Internment at Maplewood Cemetery, Springville. Clarence Day Hadley was the youngest son of Henry H. and Elizabeth Wiltse Hadley, and was born at East Ashford, June 22nd, 1883. Both his parents were descended from good New England stock and he had inherited their good traits, industry, economy and honesty. On the first day of the New Year, he was sickened with pneumonia of an aggravated type and was desperately sick for a number of weeks, but for some days before his death he had improved rapidly and all believed him on the road to recovery, when a heart complication snuffed out his life in a moment, literally, proving the truth of the bible assertion, 'In the midst of life we are in death.' About eight years ago he was joined in marriage to Miss Dora Wasson, who with two little children survive him, as do his parents and brother, Bert, of Buffalo, and an adopted sister, Mrs. Earl Cole of Springville. In his disposition and association with others he was a peculiarly lovable personality, and the friendships of boyhood with early associates ripened into strong love and regard of manhood. He was a valued member of West Valley Lodge, No 665, I O. O. F. , and had just completed a term as its presiding officer, in which position by his ability, activity and fairness of administration he had won the high regard of his associated. The lodge conducted the services which were impressive and beautiful, and a profusion of beautiful flowers were presented by members and friends. In the loss of this good brother, son, husband and father, not only the family but the community has sustained a distinct loss, and it will be many moths ere his genial smile and kindly ways will be forgotten"

Locke, who died at the home of her parents in this place on Monday was born in Machias on July 1st, 1894, the eldest daughter of Charles W. and Neola W. Locke of this place. As a child she developed a studious and sincere disposition and although never blessed with robust health-- having had considerable trouble with her eyes, an affliction which greatly interfered with her studious habits, and having contracted a severe attack of typhoid from which she seemed never to fully recover; nevertheless with hre unending patience and perserverance she continued her efforts and after overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles she graduated from Machias High School in June and with characteristic energy and seriousness sought employment which she followed until stricken by her fatal illness which developed last week Thursday at East Aurura. At first her illness was not thought to be of a serious nature but upon returning to this place and securing medical aid it was decided that she was suffering from appendicitis. Preparations were being made for her removal to a hospital for treatment, but before the arrival of the time set for her depature the disease had made such rapid progress that her removal was considered inadvisable and a specialist was called who operated at her home on Friday afternoon. The operation disclosed the fear that the disease had developed to such an extent as to render her recovery extremely doubtful, but as she seemed to rally and gain strength the hope of her family and friends, eager to grasp at the slightest encouragement, became quite confident of her ultimate recovery although all knew that she was in very serious condition yet her sudden death came as a great shock to her family and friends. Miss Locke was converted at the Christian Church of this place at an early age and was ever an energetic worker in the church and the various societies connected therewith, especially the Christian Endeavor society of which body she has long been an active member and where her smiling face, her music, and her loving kindness will be most sorely missed. She leaves to mourn her loss, besides her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Smith of East Alexander, Miss Violet Locke and one brother Wesley C. Locke, both of this place, and many other relatives and friends. The funeral services were held from the home this (Thursday) afternoon, Rev. A. G. Lewis officiating. The many and beautiful gifts of flowers and the large attendance of friends attested the high esteem in which deceased was helf by all who knew her. Internment in Maple Grove Cemetery."
