For some reason they`ve not transcribed the whole family on one page but have given John, the head, a page of his own with wife & kids on the next page. So if you do go to the site to look at the record don`t let that throw you! On the actual page image the header of the page says "Persia". The village or hamlet of Persia is in the town of Gowanda. In 1900 there is a family of Muhlbachs in Persia, Catt. Co. headed by widowed Anna, age 58, b. Germany. In the household is a Julia, age 15. (This family is indexed as Mulbach on the Heritagequest census index). also with them is a Babinger family. The wife is Anna who is listed as a daughter of Anna Muhlbach. In 1880 there is a family of Maulbechs in Gowanda, Catt. Co. headed by John Maulbech, age 38, b. Germany. Wife is listed as Nany. I think this is the same family as the one in Persia in 1900. In 1900 Julia has a brother Gottleib, age 22. There is a Godlief, age 2 on the 1880 with the Maulbechs. If you don`t have access to the records, let me know & I`ll type them up for you if you think they could be for your family. Pat R.

    3. Hi Laura, I am tracing the QUINN line in Red House but I am not sure it's the right line. My great grandfather was Patrick Quinn and his father was Michael from Ireland and his mother was Mary from England. He is listed in the 1870 Red House census with Michael from Ireland but the mother is Gretchen or Grace or something from England so I am just not sure. He had a sister that I am positive of and her name was Sarah and she married Gilbert Warner and they did live in Red House for a while before heading out to CA where Patrick followed. But in this searching I am really simply enjoyed reading about the area. A little history never hurt anyone. You have wonderful volunteers and like it or not you are their leader so you get lots of credit. Great work. A. City of Publication: Adrian Mich. Publisher: W. Stearns & Co., printers Date: 1879-1880 NORMAN B. CARTER, son of Barzilla and Mary Ruth Carter, was born in Warren, Litchfield county, Connecticut, September 7th, 1801, where he lived with his parents until the eleventh year of his age. In the year 1811 he moved with his parents to New York, and settled in the western part of that State, on the Holland Purchase. They moved with an ox-team, and were twenty-four days on the way. For five years thereafter he hardly saw the inside of a school house. He helped his father clear up a new farm, undergoing all the hardships of a new country. He remembers well the war of 1812, when the neighboring women and children would assemble together in some log house and talk over the war, and the prospect of the British and Indians coming and murdering them, the men, at the time, being on the frontier lines. In December, 1820, he took a contract of the Holland Land Company for a piece of land, in what was then called Ellicottville, Cattaraugus county. In the spring of 1821, with his small effects, he moved on this land. There was not a tree cut, or ! a neighbor living within several miles. He was one among a few who paid for his land, and got the first deed in the whole town. It was here that Mr. Carter first undertook to hew a farm out of a vast wilderness. He taught the first school in that town, his scholars coming a long distance to attend. He remained there about sixteen years, until the country was well improved. February 27th, 1827, he was married to Miss Mentha M. Bradish, of Macedon, Wayne county, New York. He came to Michigan in 1832, and purchased land in the town of Ogden, on section 8. In May, 1836, he moved upon this land with his family, where he now resides, it being the third time he (Daniel Boone like) had grappled with a wilderness country. He was justice of the peace, town clerk and school inspector, during nearly the entire time he resided in Cattaraugus county. He was justice of the peace for at least twenty-five years in Ogden, and township clerk and highway commissioner for several terms in the s! ame town. He at one time, owned sixteen hundred acres of land in Michi gan, three hundred and twenty acres being in Hillsdale, and the balance in Lenawee county. At the present time he owns six hundred and forty acres in this county, being one of the best farms in the township of Ogden. Mr. Carter has but two children living as follows: Russell C. Carter, born in Ashford, Cattaraugus county, New York, March 14th, 1832. He was married to Miss Lucinda A. Bowen, daughter of Daniel W. and Sarah R. Bowen, and now resides in Ogden, on the old homestead. Amanda D., the daughter, is the wife of John G. Mason, a druggist of Adrian, where she now resides. Mrs. Norman B. Carter was born in Macedon, Wayne county, New York, February 20th, 1800. She was the daughter of Calvin Bradish, and sister of A. Wellington, and Norman F. Bradish, of Madison, in this county. She died at her home in Ogden, November 22d, 1877. Mrs. Carter was a lady of high respectability. She had lived with her husband to an advanced age, had shared with him in all the hardships and ple! asures of subduing several new farms, and had labored hard and faithfully through life, to make her home pleasant for her children and her husband in his declining years. Her disease, a spinal difficulty, baffled the skill of our best physicians and the kind care of dear friends, for months. She died in the seventy-eighth year of her age. Norman B. Carter resides in Ogden with his son, but always finds a welcome home with his daughter, Mrs. Mason, of Adrian, where he spends much of his time. He is a man of unblemished character, and has amassed a large property through economy, prudence and strict integrity. 1. [NYCATTAR] more on death records
    2. Bernard Humphrey
    3. To the helpful folks who added comments when I mentioned not finding the deaths I wanted from the early 1880s: Unfortunately, both the church and civil records for the village of Allegany were destroyed in fires. The cemetery records (St. Bonaventure) don't go back that far. I have been to Allegany and Olean and Little Valley. I will certainly vouch for the fact that everybody there was very helpful, and I did find a lot on both visits. The University actually does have a few scattered church records from that time period, on microfilm. The old baptisms were in Latin! (Luckily I took 4 yrs of it.) I've also been to the Surrogate's and gotten the existing wills and estate records. What I would most like to find is the death of my great, great grandmother, Margaret O'Brien Moriarty. Her last child was born in Sept. 1880, but her husband died a widower (according to military pension records), in March 1883. I have seen her grave, or maybe I should say that I've seen the top part of her broken gravestone. It has her birthdate but no date of death! The state, as I indicated, doesn't have a record of it either. I've also looked through the old Allegany and Olean newspapers in the local libraries without finding a mention of her. At least I've got it narrowed down to a 2 1/2 yr. period. I even had one of the local historical societies check some funeral records for me. No luck. If anybody has any other strategies for how I could find it, I'd be grateful! Virginia H.

    3. My search location is the Town of Freedom. I was unable to get this information ( for my husband's grandmother, born 1880) as some of the records had burned in Freedom. (I did, however, get other information - both earlier and later - calling the Town Clerk - this was years ago) I have found the censuses in Freedom to be fantastic. You also get deaths in some of them. The federal censuses, both for birth and death, are there for all of Cattaragus Co. from 1820 on. They are at the County Historical Society. These originals are better than copies made for NY State, which are still better than the Federal Govt. copies ( what you get online)... my husband's grandmother is Daisy in the original and Bessie in the online Federal - miscopied! If you don't know, NYS also has their 5 year censuses. Great for info on what was going on in the house - in this case, Cattaragus Co, mostly on the farm... even listed sheep you had and flax produced in 1855! ( You make flax into linen and weave it with fine yarn and make woven "linsey woolsey", a very saleable fabric. A women with a spinning wheel and loom could make quite a bit if she had some time on her hands) I believe both are at the NYS Historical museum in Cooperstown; not 100% sure; a historian got me info from them or Albany via online link. Also, if you didn't know, NYS really has rotten records as the archives burned in around 1915 (+/- 5 years) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bernard Humphrey Sent: Wednesday, September 27, 2006 6:41 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [NYCATTAR] deaths at the NY State Dept. of Vital Records The other day someone on the list mentioned the possibility of getting an 1881 death certificate through the NY State Dept. of Vital Records in Albany. Unfortunately, when the law went into effect around 1880, counties were very slow to comply. I am convinced Cattaraugus County was one of them. I have several deaths from the early 1880s that should be there, but aren't. The people I look for tended to live in Allegany or Olean. The last time I looked through the state's microfiche for those early years, I made it a point to notice whether there were any Cattaraugus Co. locations at all. I didn't see any. 3. You should check the county records in Little Valley, and the cemetery records at the local library. I was not looking for any 1800 deaths but we were there in Aug and the people were very helpful. And the records were fairly good.
