Dear List, I have just purchased two old cabinet card photos of a young woman named Gertrude Crowell. Both are identified on the back of the card. Both photos are oval shaped on the rectangle "card" backing. One of the photos also has the photographer's name and address imprinted on the card. it says "English (photographer), South Dayton, NY". My guess is these phtotos were taken 1900-1910, but that is just a guess. I try to rescue and return old identified photos. There are normally very few photos that have ID on them. However, in this group, there were many that were identified, and a number of other surnames. I have no idea how these families connect, but some of the additional surnames were Pitts, Crons/Croins, Fox, Sthulmer/Shuhlmelr, Bessenger, and others. Many of them were located in the area of Buffalo & Springville, NY (Erie Co.), some from St. Louis., etc. So, if you think you connect to any of these persons, I will be glad to look through the photos that I have. There are numerous Pitts photos, and they are identified. I do have 3/4 unidentified photos that I am trying to match up with some of the people in the identified photos. Thank you, Judy in TX
Hello, Is there a Marriage book or published record of early Cattaraugus marriages? I'm looking specifically between 1860-1870 for William H. Aldrich & Mary S. (unknown). I've just recently received info for Wm. Aldrich that connects him to my Root family of Kalamazoo, MI. I'm trying to identify the relationship. I can find this Aldrich family in Coldspring in 1840's, then South Valley 1860 - 1870. Does anyone have William H. or Frederick Aldrich on their Family Tree? Would appreciate exchanging information with you. Thank you, Mary Ann Root
my 3 cents will make it (5), any one else have a few more cents to put into the pot? Dear Fellow list members, I have read with interest your responses to what is going on with price gouging regarding a certain membership that a number of us belong to including myself. I have to agree that we have to fight fire with fire but there are many ways to fight the fire and not just one way. For example, the Forest Service when they go into an area that is burning out of control do a "back burning" at least I think that is the name they give it. Here's the idea. They make a perimeter around the original hot spot in an area where the fire has reached yet. Then they very carefully let it burn toward the original fire. This gives the un burned area of the forest at least some protection some times this works other times it doesn't. In our case, the main fire is the group we have been discussing. So in order to stop this fire from spreading we need to use what we know best and that is spread the WORD campaign. By that I mean: 1. everyone who has written to this particular organization to keep and print off their letter to them, and their response back from the company. 2. Talk to your local news paper, radio station, and TV station. Tell them the problem. The media is always a good bet when you want to get your point made. And do a massive letter writing campaign. Be sure though you have your information to prove your point. 3. Go talk to your own lawyer or if the situation gets to the point where that is not the best idea. See if there is among the many list members an attorney and I am sure that there is , that would be willing for free or for a nominal fee supplied by the joint members of the many free list to see what he can do to help us. Most lawyers don't charge for an initial meeting with the client. Which means that the group, when they find a lawyer who is willing to listen, can bring or send to him a list of grievances regarding this situation. Be sure though to have with you copies of the letters written to the problem company and their response back. 4. It is best also to have a spokes person for each of the many list to coordinate all the many letters that our list members will be writing. Then when all have written that want to, have one person who is willing to oversee the whole of the matter as our collective representative then present it along with all the supporting arguments to the lawyer that the group has appointed as its legal representative. By putting it into his or her hands, there will be only one cook doing the cooking in the legal kitchen and less of a chance of them burning the ingredients. Be sure thought that the attorney or legal representative that you choose knows what he or she is doing. In other words you don't want a novice in the kitchen of the White House preparing to fix a grand meal for heads of state when there is a TOP NOTCH CHEF that is available that knows how to do it just right. So that his presentation will get the acclamation that it so rightly deserves. 5. Another idea and this might be as a last resort is to start our own company. It might be small at first but there are lots of free stuff available. The census is available to every one, I am sure that various list will be willing to send to the newly formed company what they have. And the best way to put a very big bite in to this problem company is to ask their members through the various free list, to send you their information to put in the new site rather than continue with their present company. It is the oldest trick in advertising to try and steal from another company their sponsors and contributors. But before that can be done as a last resort, try the other ideas that I have suggested but don't tip your hand as to what is your last result will be. You want to be able to surprise the offending company but you can't if the plan of attack is already made known. 6. If an when the enviable does happen and a new company is formed or in the works to be formed, be sure have an coordinator who can collect the many ideas that we as list members put forth. Include in the plan be sure to talk about prices and what you plan for the new company. In other words what you want to do with the company, how you want it to benefit others and perhaps allow some advertising that pertains to genealogy and those that do research for a fee, to help pay for it. These are just a few of my ideas and I know that the many list members out there have much more than I to add. What you need is a plan of attack. Starting with a coordinator or joint coordinator's for each list, to begin with. One that will be willing to organize all the complaints from each list get it in some type of order then send it to the person or persons that will be overseeing the whole project so that those who are complaining about the present policy of the company that is being discussed will have once voice. Which will then and only then can be presented to the one individual which we hope is a lawyer, that will be taking the company that many of us are so irate about to task. Don't get discouraged over this but if a grass roots effort is begun great things can happen. Besides, isn't that one of the things that our nation was founded on Freedom of Speech and the press? And one more thing, is Prayer. Pray for guidance that we be shown the right avenue to take in order to be most effective in our campaign That is the most powerful weapon of all that we have. Besides, isn't that another thing that our nation was founded on freedom of Religion. And in that freedom we have the right to pray. Joan
I've followed, with interest, the discussion of Ancestry and would make the following suggestion. How much would it cost you to spend hotel nights, travel expenses, etc. to locate some of the many things you can find on Ancestry? I justify the dollars I spend by thinking about what it would cost to travel to the site(s) to access the records I need. Some years I need lots and other years I need nothing so I don't subscribe. Some years I need foreign data and other years only what's in the US. I started doing this long before computerized data was available and have spent an incredible amount on this hobby (it would scare me to death had I ever kept track of those expenses!), so I recognize the fantastic tools with which we now have to work, but we really shouldn't expect to get something for nothing. If we don't like the way a company operates we don't need to use it, or we can encourage them to change, but seems to me we don't need to go to war over such trivial details! --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Use Yahoo! Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Great rates starting at 1ยข/min.
I am surprised that some on here have not figured out how to fight fire with fire when it comes to Ancestry.Com. I doubt enough people can get together collectively, to bring a class action suit against the company. Your best bet is to ban together and form groups of maybe 4 to 6 people. Then what you want is to appoint a Secretary/Treasurer who will be willing to take in a equal donation from each member, and be the main subscriber to Ancestry.com. Once that has happened everyone will then decide on a shared password and try to set times when each will be able to go in and access Ancestry. Everyone decides how much of Ancestry.com they would like to be able to access before the Secretary/Treasurer joins the Ancestry membership. My sister, myself and an online friend did this for three years.....it made Ancestry.com affordable to all of us. We took turns each year being the subscriber, but we used one main password and for us it was simply "genealogy". Something each of us could remember easily. If enough people do this, Ancestry will see their subscription rates go down, and THEN they will get the message. You have to find common sense ways of hitting the big company's in the pocket book. That is the only way they understand it is "the people" that rule America. June Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2006 08:23:14 -0400 From: "Dr. Dixon G. Anyone know a lawyer who would take the case? Dixon Doc, as a town historian, could you get the town to recommend someone? We would contribute as well. I see the address isn't on your old road... did you move? Judy Schwan -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Dr. Dixon G. Today was supposed to be my monthly day at the Buffalo library as a genealogical volunteer, but I just returned home Saturday to find my yard looking somewhat like an impact zone on the business end of 8-inch howitzers thanks to the "October Surprise", a devastating ice/snow/wind storm. Anyway I can't spend too much time now until I get my yard cleaned up...it'll take a week or more. I'm delighted that you took the time to enlighten us on Ancestry's latest rip-off. I have had a complaint pending with the BBB in Utah since June regarding Ancestry's (My Family.com) processing of some Irish surnames. I first complained to Ancestry in February or earlier. They have never admitted that any problem exists. The BBB has not prodded them to resolve this matter. Maybe its a case of Utah folks sticking together.I am now considering complaints to the FTC, US Attorney in Utah, and the Utah Attorney General. Ancestry clearly has a serious ethics problem and will not respond to criticisms. I wonder if it would be feasible to join together, solicit volunteers, and attempt to deal with them as a group of dissatisfied customers. Even a class action suit might not be out of the question. I don't have more time now but I do want to pursue this in a couple of weeks. Regards, Tom O'Hare, Clarence, NY PS -- My Family.com, the parent company, is regarded as "satisfactory" by the Utah BBB even though they have received more than 700 complaints against them. Sorry Jeff, you've got this one wrong. The LDS church does not make money on genealogy. The church has nothing to do with MyFamily/Ancestry other than that many of the employees happen to be LDS. The church has it's own free website (FamilySearch.org) and practically gives away its genealogy software & materials. I can't even imagine the miliions of dollars that have been spent around the world to get all the information that's available in the Salt Lake Family History Library. It's all FREE, including library access to Ancestry.com. You are right about the "gold-mine" in genealogy, but the LDS church isn't "mining" here - it's giving away the "gold"! Cheers! Surnames: Glover Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/RRB.2ACE/7477.1.3 Message Board Post: I thought you perhaps were skeptical of the connection of my Charlotte Glover Root of Kalamazoo, MI, to Henry W. Glover of Cattaraugus, NY. I've continued searching. I have information in my hand from the Weekly Courant, a local Randolph, NY newspaper, of Dec. 1880. It gives a report of my Charlotte Glover passing away at the home of nephew William Aldrich. It also states that she was the sister of "the late Henry Glover of Napoli".
