Vilola was b. 8 Nov 1871 and died 3 Dec 1953 All were from or around Glenn Falls, NY or Ellicottville, NY.. Machias, Cattaraugus Co, NY. I have headstone jpgs for Jessie T Milligan and Viola. I am looking for both sides of this marriage.. Colfs and Butlers. I think the father's name for Nelson H was William and he had married a Mariette Hopkins Meachum. Now all I need is back from there.. I also understant Emma's mom and dad might have come from overseas as Mr. Colf had gone back to England to kidnapp his wife?? I still am unclear on that part of the family but it is Colf b. 1815? married to a ? Seversmith?

Both are identified on the back of the card. Both photos are oval shaped on the rectangle "card" backing. One of the photos also has the photographer's name and address imprinted on the card. it says "English (photographer), South Dayton, NY". I try to rescue and return old identified photos. There are normally very few photos that have ID on them. However, in this group, there were many that were identified, and a number of other surnames. I have no idea how these families connect, but some of the additional surnames were Pitts, Crons/Croins, Fox, Sthulmer/Shuhlmelr, Bessenger, and others. Many of them were located in the area of Buffalo & Springville, NY (Erie Co.), some from St. Louis., etc. So, if you think you connect to any of these persons, I will be glad to look through the photos that I have. There are numerous Pitts photos, and they are identified. I do have 3 or 4 unidentified photos that I am trying to match up with some of the people in the identified photos. 3. There are quite a few Crowell families in the neighboring towns of Villenova and Hanover in Chautauqua Co. One of our neighbors was a Crowell who did genealogy but I believe old age and dementia have since set in. I don't specifically have any Gertrude's in my files. Ancestry.com shows a Gertrude, b 1918, d 1991, daughter of Daniel and Alice Crowell. They lived for a time in Mississippi. There was a family of English who settled in Markhams, just outside of South Dayton. The photographer is likely a descendent. There is a Dayton Historical Society or the Gowanda Historical Society as potential homes if relatives can't be located. 3. Vital records for the Gowanda State Hospital are on file at the Town of Collins Clerk's office in Erie Co. My g-grandfather had a brother with epilepsy who died there in 1917 and I located his death record there a couple of years ago. I don't know if they have burial info or other records. You must specifically request a search of the hospital records. If you submit a general request, they will only look at the town records. 2. Jeff - I hope you're not referring to me and my reply about the LDS Church not being involved in Ancestry.com's business - I am not an Ancestry "moderator"! I just try to clear up misunderstandings when I'm able to - like the comment about the church running everything in Utah so nothing would be done... it's just not true. As an Ancestry subscriber, I HAVE called the Provo office and forwarded complaints (from this very board) to them because I am concerned about fairness and honesty in all businesses, not just mine. As CFO for my own company, I feel it's important for the OFFICERS of Ancestry to understand what's happening with their customers. Only they can change bad company policy. If they continue to cheat their customers, they'll eventually fail, and we'll all lose! Cheers! Dear Fellow list members, I have read with interest your responses to what is going on with price gouging regarding a certain membership that a number of us belong to including myself. I have to agree that we have to fight fire with fire but there are many ways to fight the fire and not just one way. For example, the Forest Service when they go into an area that is burning out of control do a "back burning" at least I think that is the name they give it. Here's the idea. They make a perimeter around the original hot spot in an area where the fire has reached yet. Then they very carefully let it burn toward the original fire. This gives the un burned area of the forest at least some protection some times this works other times it doesn't. In our case, the main fire is the group we have been discussing. So in order to stop this fire from spreading we need to use what we know best and that is spread the WORD campaign. By that I mean: 1. everyone who has written to this particular organization to keep and print off their letter to them, and their response back from the company. 2. Talk to your local news paper, radio station, and TV station. Tell them the problem. The media is always a good bet when you want to get your point made. And do a massive letter writing campaign. Be sure though you have your information to prove your point. 3. Go talk to your own lawyer or if the situation gets to the point where that is not the best idea. See if there is among the many list members an attorney and I am sure that there is , that would be willing for free or for a nominal fee supplied by the joint members of the many free list to see what he can do to help us. Most lawyers don't charge for an initial meeting with the client. Which means that the group, when they find a lawyer who is willing to listen, can bring or send to him a list of grievances regarding this situation. Be sure though to have with you copies of the letters written to the problem company and their response back. 4. It is best also to have a spokes person for each of the many list to coordinate all the many letters that our list members will be writing. Then when all have written that want to, have one person who is willing to oversee the whole of the matter as our collective representative then present it along with all the supporting arguments to the lawyer that the group has appointed as its legal representative. By putting it into his or her hands, there will be only one cook doing the cooking in the legal kitchen and less of a chance of them burning the ingredients. Be sure thought that the attorney or legal representative that you choose knows what he or she is doing. In other words you don't want a novice in the kitchen of the White House preparing to fix a grand meal for heads of state when there is a TOP NOTCH CHEF that is available that knows how to do it just right. So that his presentation will get the acclamation that it so rightly deserves. 5. Another idea and this might be as a last resort is to start our own company. It might be small at first but there are lots of free stuff available. The census is available to every one, I am sure that various list will be willing to send to the newly formed company what they have. And the best way to put a very big bite in to this problem company is to ask their members through the various free list, to send you their information to put in the new site rather than continue with their present company. It is the oldest trick in advertising to try and steal from another company their sponsors and contributors. But before that can be done as a last resort, try the other ideas that I have suggested but don't tip your hand as to what is your last result will be. You want to be able to surprise the offending company but you can't if the plan of attack is already made known. 6. If an when the enviable does happen and a new company is formed or in the works to be formed, be sure have an coordinator who can collect the many ideas that we as list members put forth. Include in the plan be sure to talk about prices and what you plan for the new company. In other words what you want to do with the company, how you want it to benefit others and perhaps allow some advertising that pertains to genealogy and those that do research for a fee, to help pay for it. These are just a few of my ideas and I know that the many list members out there have much more than I to add. What you need is a plan of attack. Starting with a coordinator or joint coordinator's for each list, to begin with. One that will be willing to organize all the complaints from each list get it in some type of order then send it to the person or persons that will be overseeing the whole project so that those who are complaining about the present policy of the company that is being discussed will have once voice. Which will then and only then can be presented to the one individual which we hope is a lawyer, that will be taking the company that many of us are so irate about to task. Don't get discouraged over this but if a grass roots effort is begun great things can happen. Besides, isn't that one of the things that our nation was founded on Freedom of Speech and the press? And one more thing, is Prayer. Pray for guidance that we be shown the right avenue to take in order to be most effective in our campaign That is the most powerful weapon of all that we have. Besides, isn't that another thing that our nation was founded on freedom of Religion. And in that freedom we have the right to pray. 3. The 1920 census shows a Nicholas Winter, wife Cecelia, and son Francis, age 8, and daughter Bernice, age 7 of North Collins, Erie Co, NY. According to my notes, Nicholas is the son of Peter Winter and Susan Weber. His sister Catherine married a Joseph Boardway. Ancestry.com shows Cecelia as Cecelia Miller. I have 2 possible Emma Boardway's. One is the daughter of Nicholas Boardway and Catherine Lallman, born 1875. She married a Frederick Herye. The other is Emma Smith, wife of Raymond Boardway, born 1895. They were married in 1919. Raymond's sister, Mary was married to a Clarence Winter. Raymond and Mary are grandchildren of Nicholas and Catherine Boardway. The first Emma would be their aunt. If family can't be found, you may want to donate them to the Gowanda Historical Society. Yes buuuuut--- They also take all the data we've spent time and money to surch out and place in our trees and sell it though there company-- just see world tree-- it should be free!!!!!!! we did the work we share it for free. now why should we have to pay for it? lets start a new world tree for free! ed jr Been with Ancestry for sooooo long. Subject: Re: [NYCATTAR] Ancestry.com changes - my four-bits worth..... I've followed, with interest, the discussion of Ancestry and would make the following suggestion. How much would it cost you to spend hotel nights, travel expenses, etc. to locate some of the many things you can find on Ancestry? I justify the dollars I spend by thinking about what it would cost to travel to the site(s) to access the records I need. Some years I need lots and other years I need nothing so I don't subscribe. Some years I need foreign data and other years only what's in the US. I started doing this long before computerized data was available and have spent an incredible amount on this hobby (it would scare me to death had I ever kept track of those expenses!), so I recognize the fantastic tools with which we now have to work, but we really shouldn't expect to get something for nothing. If we don't like the way a company operates we don't need to use it, or we can encourage them to change, but seems to me we don't need to go to war over such trivial details!

Both of these photos are "bodice & up" studio portraits. The cards are identical, but have different backgrounds. They are identified on the back of the card. Then, there is a 3rd photo, taken at a later time, and it is in the postcard style. It is identified on the back as "Mrs. N. Winter" and an infant son, "Francis Winter". It is also dated on the back with the year, 1912. I believe "Mrs. Winter" is the same as Emma Boardway. The ladies appear to be the same person, but that is just my opinion. I try to rescue and return old cabinet card photos when they are identified. Precious few have any ID on them. My hope is to return these photos to their families when I can find them. I am still searching for any info about Cornelius Van Dyke, who was killed in 1813. Also, I'm hoping to find some history on his family before his wife Sarah moved to Lewistown, Illinois in 1823. I would be delight to exchange similar info about these families if you are interested. Paul Van Dyke
