    1. [NYCATTAR] Photograph of Temple B'nai Israel in Olean
    2. Julian H. Preisler
    3. Dear List Members: My name is Julian H. Preisler and I reside in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia near Washington, DC. I am searching for a person who can take a color photograph of the exterior of Temple B'nai Israel at 127 South Barry Street. I am researching American Synagogue Architecture and am in the process of creating an e-Book on the subject. Photo credit will be given to the photographer both in the research project and upon publication. If anyone can do this for me or knows of someone who is willing to assist, please do get in touch with me. Photographs can be digital (preferred), but I can also accept regular print photographs and can scan them into the database. I have photographs of some of the Jewish temples and synagogues in New york State and would also like to include the one in Olean. I thank you in advance for your help and look forward to hearing from any of you. Sincerely, Mr. Julian H. In 1850 census, Tompkins Co., Levi and 2nd wife, Sarah, are enumerated with Erastas, Emeline, Frances, Alma(h), and Henry. By 1860 census, Levi and family had moved to Portville, Cattaraugus Co. I think Sarah died in 1869 and is buried in Mount View Cemetery. Levi appears to be remarried in Olean 1870 census and has real estate valued at $5,000, although this Levi is recorded with MA birthplace. A Levi Clark is shown in the Leonard Salsbury home in the Portville 1880 census. Levi's son, Henry, married to Adelle, is in Portville in 1870 census, along with Francis and Alma Brown. Adelle died in 1873 (Mount View Cem) and by 1880 census, Henry is married to Ella and has children Louis, Adell and Levi. The 1900 and 1910 Olean City census has a Henry and Ella with other children, but this Henry's birthplace is Vermont. Then in 1920 I found a Henry and Ella, rig! ht age and birthplace, in Tompkins Co. My connection to this family is through Levi Clark and his first wife, Candace Hathaway, and their daughter, Elizabeth Clark Carver. I would very much appreciate any help on sorting through these Clarks. Thanks, Bonnie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: MarHillman Surnames: Hillman, Strong Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.cattaraugus/1452.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am descended from Harley Hillman, who married Lucy Strong. I have no proof this Lucy is Ezra's daughter, but as Harley and Ezra are listed next to each other in the 1850 and 1860 census, it is highly likely. If so, I can provide much info on Lucy's descendants. I have not been able, however, to find out who Harley's parents were, or if he is related to the Daniel Hillman buried in Elton Cemetery. Harley and Lucy are buried in Bellville Cemetery, New Hudson, Allegany County, NY. My cousin has a charcoal portrait of Lucy. I have not seen it, but she has promised to show it to me when I can arrange a visit. I will take a digital photo and will be happy to share it. In 1870 Rachel and William are in Yorkshire, Cattaraugus, but the census record is very faint and I can't tell if the head of house is Frederick. He is listed as age 53, and from Prussia. Rachel is from Prussia and aged 32. In Ancestry.com they are indexed as KINGS. I hope this helps. She seems to have married soon after coming to the Cattaraugus area. She married an unknown King and in the 1880 census is a widow with one child, William King, born 1857, living in Yorkshire, Cattaraugus, NY. page 171C.
