There are posters there who have extensive knowledge of that county. The town of Pomfret was not formed until the early 1800`s & the land where Chautauqua & Cattaraugus counties lie was not purchased from the native Americans until the 1790`s. Prior to that time it was mostly wilderness with few, if any, white settlers. As far as I know there was no native tribe there called the Chautauqua. Pat R. Wife Barbara is 56 years old, also born in NY. I think this may be another of the children of an unknown male Phillips, possibly Daniel, and his wife Hannah Phillips ( maiden name unknown) who at one time lived in Tioga, PA. If anyone has any info at all please contact me at [email protected] I dont find them anywhere in NY after 1850, and am curious as to where they might have gone, or if they died? Thanks! History The parish of the Transfiguration, located in Olean, N.Y. in Cattaraugus County, was founded in June of 1902 through the hard work of the Polish settlers in that region. Poles were drawn to the town because of the diverse industries located there before the turn of the century. The largest employment was in rail car repair, tanneries, glass works, and oil refineries. Due to the number of Poles located in Olean, the Bishop had assigned a Polish speaking priest to St. John's Parish in Olean. By 1902, the community was large enough to support its own parish and a priest; Bishop Quigley sent Fr. Wladyslaw Hordych as organizer and first pastor. During his two year pastorate, Fr. Hordych built the wooden framed church. The parish school was staffed by the Felician Sisters beginning in 1907 and the sisters remained until the school was closed in 1980 and combined with other southern tier parish schools. To the present day 14 pastors have served this small parish community. The present pastor is a young priest, Fr. Jerome Stelmach. www.pgsnys.org one of which is www.feefhs.org which has much much incld maps. good luck and have fun! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
