Does anyone know if any assessment rolls exist for Cattaraugus County before 1850? I've checked FHL, but they have none. If they do, how can I access them from MO? Thanks, Mary

I know that the Bethuel Hitchcock home in Victor has been recently purchased and is being researched for the new owners. I found Bethuel in Hartford Ct, I think, before he went to NY. If you are unaware of this piece I will get out my notes and tell you what I know. In the meantime, anything we can learn about the William next door to Otis in 1840, will be useful, if only to eliminate him from my possibilities. William was and is a name that has "adhered" in the family. William's son was Porter William, and the next three generation (my grandfather, uncle and cousin) were Lawrence William. I have long suspected that William's father may have been William as well. There is a William who shows up in Ontario Co in the 1820 census but I can learn nothing else about him. I'll be happy to share what I know. Heath Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Bethuel was Otis's Father. They lived on Pine Hill in Randoph, New York. Otis had a son Edwin Hastings Hitchock, who had a son Otis as well. Also Bethuel had a son named Bethuel. I looked to see if I could find a William and I could not. I am a direct line of Hitchock's in that area, and have Hitchcock family still living there at the old homestead. I will ask them if they know anything... Bethuel was said to have fought in the War of 1812. Some say he died there, Sackett's Harbor. I found a record that says he was at his daughter's wedding which was in Henrietta, New York after the war was over...So that is still the question, where is Bethuel??? Sorry I could not be any more help...I started the orginal post a few years back trying to get some answer, so surprised that people still answer it...Let me know if I can be of any other help. I will contact my family and see what they may have on William. Linda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have been looking for information about a William Hitchcock born Ontario Co NY about 1825. Later married Lydia Bailey and lived in Dayton Cattaraugus before immigrating to McHenry Co Illinois in the 1860s. His parentage is unknown to me, but I have wanted to investigate his possible connection to Bethuel. Were Bethuel and Otis Hitchcock brothers? They lived next door to one another in the 1830 census in Cattaraugus. Then in 1840, Bethuel does not appear, but Otis is next door to William. This is a tantalizing connection for me because I have been unable to learn anything about William's origins. He was my maternal GG grandfather. My grandfather said he thought his g grandfather (that would be Bethuel's generation,) had fought in the War of 1812. Any help you can offer will be appreciated. My guess is the Mrs. Maud Prince you are seeking is the second wife of my great grandfather, Arthur LaVerne Prince. The reason I believe this is Arthur died in the Jamestown Hospital 5 Jun 1931. I have a copy of their marriage license, which states it was Maud's second marriage and that her name was Emma Wright. While researching in Chautaqua County, I also found some deeds that showed her using both Emma Wright and Maud Prince as her name in the same time frame. Emma/Maud (all of my relatives that knew her called her Maud) was married to Arthur 22 Jan 1921 in Kennedey, Chaut. County, NY. Maud's first husband's last name was Van Ord. I don't have a first name for him. Emma' parents are Will Wright and Kate Smith. This is pretty much all I have on her. I'm sorry to say I have no idea if the S.S. Nichols mentioned in the death notice from the Olean newspaper is Sanford Nichols or not. It is hard to even know whether this S.S. Nichols was even from New York - newspapers in those days often posted death notices of veterans from other areas. Good luck in your search.
