He knew Ruth in the 60's when she married a friend of his, Michael Flagg. Ruth and Michael lived in SF, CA and Chico, CA where Michael passed away. Ruth then went to live with Alicia Weishaar (don't know how Alicia and Ruth are related, could be sisters or mother/daughter?). Ruth passed away in 1999 in Fremont, CA. Before Ruth married Michael, she lived in Cattaraugus, NY. Her daughter, Naomi Cunningham (m. Gary Rosenberry), graduated from CCS in 1953. Ruth worked for a church starting in 1940 and was ordained as a Reverend in 1959. I'm looking for the name of Ruth's husband, the names of their other children (we think there is another daughter who lived in Lancaster, CA), her husband's line of work and when he died. Thanks, Ronda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [NYCATTAR] Rathbun Cemetery
    2. mary dempsey
    3. Is there someone who would be willing to do some probing at Rathbun Cemetery?   In Sec 6, Lot 31, there are four plots but only one recorded burial... Jemima Wright, who died 5 Apr 1857, is buried in plot 3.  I believe that plots 1, 2 and 4 may be the final resting place of 3 ancestors, but there is no existing record of those burials.   What I'm hoping for is that someone would be willing to go to Lot 31 and probe the plots to see if maybe markers were once there, but sank under the surface of the ground over time.   If someone would do this for me, I would be eternally grateful. Thank you.   Kindest Regards, Mary Dempsey

I was thinking that she may have even been married to Arthur's father, then he might have died or have been killed. If she was divorced, I don't see why she would have kept the Bates name. The only time I see a reference to her maiden name "SHOEMAN"(her obituary in the paper lists her as CLARA BATES-OSTERSTUCK) was her obituary in the newspaper. She was a pedestrian killed by a vehicle in 1930. It's a real headscratcher but I really hope you are right and I can see the fathers name on that paper. It's hard to say who might be the father listed on the birth certificate! If Clara used the name of Bates (and it wasn't her maiden name), I would wager that a Bates might show up as the father of Arthur G. It's been my experience that adoption records are sealed only if the child has been born out of wedlock, and adopted immediately by someone other than the birth parents. In that case, the adoptive parents' names are on the new birth certificate. This would happen if the adoption took place shortly after birth, and Arthur would have used Osterstuck from birth onwards. It's clear that Clara always was in the picture. The fact that he is shown with the Bates name as a stepson, on the census, leads me to believe that the birth certificate will show Arthur's birth father. Let's hope this is the case!
