Specifically I am now seeking information on an Ernie P. Mapes (1887-1912), son of Phinando Philando Mapes and Hattie Elizabeth Brooks. Ernie was born in Portville, Cattaraugus Co., NY in 1887 and in the 1900 census is living with his family in Bradford, McKean Co., PA (right across the NY/PA border). I have no source for his marriage, but he is alleged to have married a Gertrude Roseboom in 1907, but I am unable to find the couple in the 1910 census. Ernie Mapes died in 1912 and is buried in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Portville, Cattaraugus Co., NY. Questions: Who is Gertrude Roseboom? When and where was she born and who were her parents? Did Ernie and Gertrude ever have children? Did Gertrude remarry after Ernie died? Willing to share information. The Olean Public Library should have both the NY and the Federal Census, as well as city directories. Birth records don't go back that far. I will be about an hour away from Olean on business this summer. I will have part of one day only for research. It's not much, but that's all I will have. Edward Devello Seldon told his daughter he was born there in 1860. I have found nothing on him in NY (0n-line and in books, census). I would like to know if there is a place where I can look up birth records for that time. Or any other type of record that may show his name. His wedding photo has "married in NY 1894" handwritten on the back. Their second child (the first was not alive at this birth) was born in Chicago in 1896. However he, and his wife, were listed as single in the 1900 IL census. I found a marriage cert. for them in IL in 1900. They were separated by the 1910 census, and she remarried about 1915. He changed his name to Sheldon by the 1920 census, and he died using that name in Chicago in 1920. Perhaps there are tax records or other types of records where I can try to find ANY Seldons in Oleans for that time period. Thee was a Charles Seldon in Cattaraugus Co. I found a boy born in 1861, in Vermont, whose father was born in NY. Both were named Edward D Seldon. I would appreciate ANY advice. Diane
