There are a lot of obits & burial records in Machias, so this might prove to be a real learning experience! Cenotaphs were quite common in the 19th century. There is one in Maplewood Cemetery, Springville, for my immigrant Prior ancestor, James Prior. He was lost overboard, mid-Atlantic, in April 1834, leaving an intrepid wife and nine children! The youngest child was not even a year old. James' body was never recovered. Anne Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. One, it is a different James Fuller. Two, it's just a headstone, he's not really buried there. Some descendants had a headstone placed there so they would have a place to mourn. I know there are two headstones for my great great grandfather. One is in the family cemetery and one is where he is actually buried. I haven't really researched my Fuller line. Do any of you have a connection to PRINCE, MOSHER, or MILK(s)? My great grandmother is Lula Minnie FULLER, daughter of Levi and Susan FULLER. Lula married Arthur LaVern PRINCE. He was interesting to research because he is also found under Vern, Leverne and several other variations of his name. If you are indeed descended through James Fuller, we may be related. I'm descended through Henry and Hannah Fuller of Cattaraugus County, and their son, James Hawley Fuller. As you can see from the naming of Henry's son, a connection between Henry and James Fuller is definitely suspected, although I have yet to see the proof. I wonder if a brother, uncle, or father of yours has had the y-chromosome male paternity test offered through Ancestry? And if not, might that be a possibility in the near future? I am very curious to know your Fuller ancestry. Who knows -- might be a clue I've overlooked in there! :) As for Abiah Botsford Fuller, I've never seen a cemetery enumeration for Thomas Corners that listed her, including the one for which you provded the link. A number of the graves in Thomas Corners are posted on Find-a-Grave, but not hers. Would you mind sending me the photograph of her grave? You can use my personal email address of waf@irishjava.com. If both she and her husband made it to Cattaraugus County, that's significant. If so, I suspect they came with either Almon or Amos, their sons. It would also mean they lived to a really ripe old age! :) Thanks again for your post, Anne, and I am so glad to meet you! I look forward to hearing your reply. On the 1810 census there were 348 heads of household in Willink, Niagara Co. Willink later became the towns of Eden, Aurora & Concord (1820s). Three of the names of the heads of household in 1810 were Fuller- A. Fuller, D. Fuller & T. Fuller. I checked for James Fuller, b. 1737 in the databases at WorldConnect. It doesn`t appear that anyone knows his actual death date or place. A few have him dying in Catt. Co. & some say Salisbury, Ct. It looks as if at least two of his sons, Almon & Amos, were in Niagara Co. very early; they had children born there in 1813 & 1818. It`s possible James was living with one of these sons when he died. Another possiblity is that the stone is a memorial placed by his family. The cemetery itself is actually in Erie Co., I believe, near Springville. Pat R. How can someone who was born in 1737 in Connecticut be buried in Cattaraugus County, New York, even while most web sources identify his place of death as Litchfield, CT? Since Cattaraugus County wasn't really settled until the 1820's or so, how can James' grave be there? And yes, Find-a-grave has a photo of that gravestone, in the Thomas Corners Cemetery. If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them! :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
