If he died in New York City, you can look on Family Search for free. There were no death certs in 1862 but there were death records kept in ledger books. FS has brief summaries of each of these ledger book death records.  Don't forget wildcard spellings such as 'G*rd*n'.  In a quick look, I did not see him in 1862 but it's worth checking a few years each side.  You can also search the 1860 US census for free on Family Search.  It's a common name unfortunately, but you do have some info so worth looking.  If you have an international Ancestry membership, you can search there too tho not for the death. Good luck.
