Frances, we do not know he died in NYC or even near it. The researcher has identified two possibilities on the 1860 census, one in a Manhattan prison and one in Westchester Co. But are those the only possibilities in the state? According to the headstone in Aberdeen it says JOHN GORDON died 1862 aged 21 "in New York USA". It is most likely he was Presbyterian - all the other family members were.
