    3. Sharon, Do you know if he died in New York City or New York State? Was he born in Scotland? Did he come here alone, with his brother, with his parents? A headstone stands in Aberdeen Scotland cemetery stating that JOHN GORDON died 1862 aged 21. His parents were John Gordon and Charlotte Glass. Is there any way of filling in the blanks of John's life from an American aspect? I can find no immigration record but do know that the stone was raised by his brother CHARLES GORDON who is given as being in Chicago. Any help most appreciated. What I know: Born in Aberdeen Scotland abt 1841-43. I haven't found a baptism for him but this does agree with the age on census (in Scotland) and his date of death in the US. His parents were John Gordon and Charlotte Glass deceased 1848 and 1854 respectively. Headstone in Aberdeen Scotland reads: In loving memory of JOHN GORDON Feuar Aberdeen died 3 January 1848 aged 80. Also his wife CHARLOTTE GLASS died 10th October 1854 aged 51. In memoriam by their son Charles, Chicago USA Also in memory of their sons ALEXANDER died 1837 aged 2 1/2 years. John died in New York USA 1862 aged 21. If I have the right Charles then he arrived abt 1853 (from census), however I have drawn a blank with immigration papers. I can't locate either of them on a census about this time. This is a 20 year old brick wall that is gradually falling - all because I got a DNA match (4th cousin) in the US ???? 2. Hi Sharon, Since you've been at this for 20 years, perhaps one of your facts is incorrect. What is your source for the death date of your John GORDON in New York City in 1862. When handwritten in cursive the number "2" can be mis-transcribed to "5" Sharon, since you are new to researching in the USA, today NYC is comprised of 5 counties, but in 1862-1865 it was predominantly one, New York County. However, Kings County aka Brooklyn, which is today part of NY City, was a separate city then. Here are the results of Family Search where I entered John's name, no birth date or place, Brooklyn as place of death in range 1861 -1865. . https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=75&query=%2Bgivenname%3AJohn~%20%2Bsurname%3AGordon~%20%2Bdeath_place%3Abrooklyn%20%2Bdeath_year%3A1861-1865~ -----Original Message----- From: Sharon Jameson <sharemslie@iinet.net.au> JOHN GORDON d 1862 Born in Aberdeen Scotland abt 1841-43.
