Virginia These are the two I found in New York about the right age. I don't have a definite date for John, just going on what is written on the headstone and his age on the Scottish census. One aged 19 living in New York > Westchester > Mount Pleasant - day labourer. The other aged 18 in New York Ward 6, District 4, New York - a clerk - he was in New York Prison according to what is written along the side of the schedule. Did John GORDON die while serving in the American Civil War? -----Original Message----- From: Sharon Jameson <sharemslie@iinet.net.au> Born in Aberdeen Scotland abt 1841-43. I haven't found a baptism for him but this does agree with the age on census (in Scotland) and his date of death in the US. His parents were John Gordon and Charlotte Glass deceased 1848 and 1854 respectively. Headstone in Aberdeen Scotland reads:In loving memory of JOHN GORDON Feuar Aberdeen died 3 January 1848 aged 80. Also his wife CHARLOTTE GLASS died 10th October 1854 aged 51.In memoriam by their son Charles, Chicago USAAlso in memory of their sons ALEXANDER died 1837 aged 2 1/2 years. John died in New York USA 1862 aged 21.If I have the right Charles then he arrived abt 1853 (from census), however I have drawn a blank with immigration papers. I can't locate either of them on a census about this time. This is a 20 year old brick wall that is gradually falling - all because I got a DNA match (4th cousin) in the US ?? Would a Scottish youth have joined the army? Possible! I have nothing else for him except what is on the headstone though. Thanks for the suggestion, always worth considering every possibility!
