    3. I agree on that point, but I think it unlikely he would have died in N.Y. in 1862 had he been a combatant. Meaning, he would have been more likely to have died in the field or close to it. Not impossible that he died in one of these military hospitals maintained in N.Y. for men who were recuperating, but less likely. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Qui vit sans folie n'est pas si sage qu'il croit. ~Francois de La Rochefoucault ________________________________ From: NYC-ROOTS <nyc-roots-bounces+francebrun=hotmail.com@rootsweb.com> on behalf of metronycancestry@aol.com <metronycancestry@aol.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 5, 2017 9:12:34 PM To: nyc-roots@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYC-ROOTS] JOHN GORDON d1862 Untrue. Could we see whatever census information you have for him? Also, what was his religion? Knowing where he lived and what his religion was might give us some educated guesses regarding the cemetery. There is also the chance that he was buried in the City Cemetery (Potter's Field), and those books are not searchable online. Someone would have to look at the films at the Municipal Archives. It wouldn't take long, and maybe someone is planning a trip there soon who could put it on their list. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Qui vit sans folie n'est pas si sage qu'il croit. ~Francois de La Rochefoucault ________________________________ From: NYC-ROOTS <nyc-roots-bounces+francebrun=hotmail.com@rootsweb.com> on behalf of Sharon Jameson <sharemslie@iinet.net.au> Sent: Sunday, December 3, 2017 6:48 PM To: nyc-roots@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYC-ROOTS] JOHN GORDON d1862 > Yes, I was also thinking that he could have died in the civil war, or at least been a combatant, but I think > you'd need more info to be able to evaluate the records The thought had never occurred to me. Would a Scottish youth have joined the army? Possible! I have nothing else for him except what is on the headstone though. Thanks for the suggestion, always worth considering every possibility! 3. I am not sure about how correct the information is on the headstone - given it was probably raised AFTER John died in 1862 the memory of Charles (who raised it) might be a little vague. He got his mother's date of death wrong by 1 or 2 days - I suppose that can be forgiven but I have seen errors on headstones done by the monumental mason also. I think a death record for John will take as long to find as the family in America - 20 years ???? However I do appreciate everyone's input. I am a lot wiser re research in the area. My motto is never say never with research - so the hunt will continue Many thanks to everyone who had input. 2. It is not unlikely at all. The CW broke out in April 1861. Soldiers enlisted for 3 mo. stints. Genealogy was never based on likelihoods and suppositions. ------------- I agree on that point, but I think it unlikely he would have died in N.Y. in 1862 had he been a combatant.
