On the other hand, if the information was correct from the headstone, that he died in NY, then it couldn't have been in the Civil War. Could we see whatever census information you have for him? Also, what was his religion? Knowing where he lived and what his religion was might give us some educated guesses regarding the cemetery. There is also the chance that he was buried in the City Cemetery (Potter's Field), and those books are not searchable online. Someone would have to look at the films at the Municipal Archives. It wouldn't take long, and maybe someone is planning a trip there soon who could put it on their list. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Qui vit sans folie n'est pas si sage qu'il croit. ~Francois de La Rochefoucault ________________________________ From: NYC-ROOTS <nyc-roots-bounces+francebrun=hotmail.com@rootsweb.com> on behalf of Sharon Jameson <sharemslie@iinet.net.au> Sent: Sunday, December 3, 2017 6:48 PM To: nyc-roots@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYC-ROOTS] JOHN GORDON d1862 > Yes, I was also thinking that he could have died in the civil war, or at least been a combatant, but I think > you'd need more info to be able to evaluate the records The thought had never occurred to me. Would a Scottish youth have joined the army? Possible! I have nothing else for him except what is on the headstone though. Thanks for the suggestion, always worth considering every possibility! Untrue. The CW began in 1861.
