Good morning listers I am very new to American research so was wondering if someone could help me with where to look for a death record. A headstone stands in Aberdeen Scotland cemetery stating that JOHN GORDON died 1862 aged 21. His parents were John Gordon and Charlotte Glass. Is there any way of filling in the blanks of John's life from an American aspect? I can find no immigration record but do know that the stone was raised by his brother CHARLES GORDON who is given as being in Chicago. Any help most appreciated. You should research the brother in Chicago for as much information as possible on the family. You are posting to a New York City board--not sure of the connection? JOHN GORDON died in New York in 1862 - I was looking for places to find a death certificate or perhaps a census record. If he didn't die in NYC, then NY State would have the records. I have seen microfilm of NY State Death indexes at NARA in Manhattan, but can't remember if they go back to 1862, probably due, but someone else on this list should know.
