    1. [NYC-ROOTS] Initial information from Naturalization records?

    3. Can anyone tell me if there would be any initial paperwork available for naturalizations in NYC in the 1870's? I have the images available through Family Search (GS 001477183 image 502) for a Jeremiah Sullivan who I think may be a relation (haven't proved relationship yet) from the New York, Southern District -- Petitions for Naturalization 1878, Vol. 12, page 306.The images show a slip stating that Jeremiah Sullivan made an intention to become a citizen on 10 September 1872, which is shown both over and flipped up on the final oath on 26 October 1878. There is nothing about where Jeremiah came from in Ireland or how long he had been in the United States or anything like that. The only comparison I have is the naturalization papers of my great-grandfather, where he was required to state the village of his birth in Wales, his parents names, the name of the ship he came over on and the date of passage, etc., etc. Shouldn't there be something similar to that for Jeremiah Sullivan? If so, where do I look for such initial papers? Many thanks for any advice!! ~ Holly in Oregon Sent from Outlook<http://aka.ms/weboutlook>

    3. Unfortunately, NYC naturalizations at that time have very little info.  Ancestry has the images.  The most you can hope for is the occupation and current address and whether they could sign their own names, indicating literacy.  The witness may also have that info and you should always research the witness as it may lead to more clues.  You will not find place of origin in Ireland, immigration info or anything else.  ----Good luck, Virginia On ‎Thursday‎, ‎May‎ ‎10‎, ‎2018‎ ‎08‎:‎31‎:‎07‎ ‎PM, Caryn <Lady-Elinor@hotmail.com> wrote: Can anyone tell me if there would be any initial paperwork available for naturalizations in NYC in the 1870's? 3. I was afraid of that. Nuts. Thank you very much, though, Virginia!! The witness has an unusual name, which is at least something! :) Many thanks, ~ Holly Sent from Outlook<http://aka.ms/weboutlook> ________________________________ From: VLB via NYC-ROOTS <nyc-roots@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 10, 2018 6:54 PM To: nyc-roots@rootsweb.com; ny-irish@rootsweb.com Cc: VLB Subject: [NYC-ROOTS] Re: Initial information from Naturalization records?
