I am hand delivering an order for death certificates to the New York State Archives in Albany... For some reason if they are hand delivered the wait time is about 6-8 weeks. They seem to prefer requests to be hand delivered Their wait time for mail orders is about 8 months!! If anyone is interested in joining me in ordering please let me know ASAP. I have been doing RAOGK in NYState Vital Records Index at my library for years. When I find the entry I give the requestor the Date, Cert Number and Town of the event and where to write. If you order through the municipality the event happened the fee is $22 and the wait time is about a month. I have a list of municipality addresses should anyone need an address. Hope this helps. I'd like to add that, if you do request a certificate from the local municipality, you should ask that they send a photocopy of the original record. Some municipalities will send a transcription which often does not include all the original information. Transcriptions are also subject to interpretation and error. I'd much rather interpret the original information myself. Interestingly, I hand-delivered a request to the Vital Records office in Menands in early December 2017 and still have not received the certificates. In the past, this method had an even faster turn-around time than the drop box at the NYS Archives. I'm now wondering if my request is still in the queue or if the certificates were lost in the mail.
