The woman I spoke with told me that they are digitizing ALL of their records and that many are already digitized. That is actual images, not transcriptions. She said to just look up the microfilm number and then check to see if it already is digitized. But that means that all those NYC births, marriages and deaths and much more will be online free at www.familysearch.org No more princely sums to the DOR. She said it will take another two years or so to finish the project but it was pretty fabulous news to me.
