If the DC is more than 50 yrs old, you are entitled to it, even if you are not a directline descendant. However, you really need to know the exact place of death. LDS lists a Death Index for NYS in the 1960s. Warning: Lately many municipalities have refused me actual DC copies; instead they've sent me typewritten transcriptions that omit key information, but they charge full price.
