Hello to all I am new to this list, and don’t really know what I am doing. I JUST HOPE THAT I HAVE GOT THROUGH TO THE RIGHT LIS! I am trying to trace one of my 4 x Gt Grandmother and any of her family. So far as I know they originated in Rutland Count, England. But with such an unusual name it should be easy. But not so. The result is that I am trying to follow up on any SNOUCH anywhere. The New York people found recently are >From Common Council Minutes, City or New York 14 May 1810 Fire Engine Company No 32. Edward SNOUCH, carpenter No 130 Bowery Lane vice (= replaced?) Peter Provost resigned 19 November 1810 Samuel Patterson, carpenter corner of Pump and Sedcond Street 10th ward v Peter Snouch resigned I wonder if anyone can tell me more about the two Snouches. Where they came from, familt etc. I also find a reference to a will as follows but have no idea what it means. This came from Ancestry, but as I do not have a subscription that covers the USA I am unable to get more. Hi Pete,   I just went onto Ancestry.  Didn't find anything about the people you're looking for, but did find some interesting entries.  There's a 1931 manifest of aliens employed as crew on the vessel "Niew Amsterdam" coming into NY.  A Willem F. Hello Peter, Here are a few suggestions: www.familysearch.org This is Free, and has US locations. On the home page of that site please scroll down to where it says about a PROTOTYPE , which is a NEW website. This new website has actual images of census pages, and is FREE. One thing I have learned about this new website: you should browse through the database collection and then choose what you want to look at, then type in your surname. Because I have found that if you simply type in a surname, in your case Snouch, you may only get a few 'hits', but there will be more hits when you put the surname into each database. I do not know why this is, but I have found this through experience. There are quite a number of databases specific to New York City (NYC), and of course there are many census records you can look at. I tried to find any graves at: www.findagrave.com but there was no hit on Snouch. I went to Hertitage Quest, which is a census collection, and there was no hit on Snouch, which was surprising to me. Heritage Quest does not take into account for spelling variations. However, the prototype website I mentioned above does return data on anything which might be Snouch, spelled differently. Concerning the location of Fishkill, Dutchess Co, NY where there was a Will for James Snouch in 1819-1821 period: this area is also refered to as Rumbout Precinct, and also can be refered to as Wappingers Creek. I have many ancestors from that area in the same time period and earlier. Most of the residents were DUTCH people, descendants of Dutch person having come to Mahattan in the 1620-1670 time frame. However, there were some NEW comers and some from England. I happen to know that Stephen Callow lived there in the area and had come from London, England. He was an Upholsterer and Furniture maker/dealer. He was the second husband of my ancestor Sarah Drake Brower Callow. Hope this website I mentioned here will help you.
