    1. [NYC-ROOTS] Methodist Episcopal Cemetery?
    2. Angela Munro
    3. Hi, I just got a copy of the death information for a relative and the column titled "Cemetery" it says "Methodist Episcopal". I did a search online for a Methodist Episcopal Cemetery but couldn't narrow it down to NYC. There were other Methodist Episcopal cemeteries but they were all over the place in other states. Was this an actual name of the cemetery? Was this name changed either to or from Methodist Episcopal? The relative that I'm looking for is Robert Perry who died 19 Feb 1832 in New York City. There's also another column next to Cemetery that is titled either "Section" or "Sexton" and that says "E. or C. Pope". Was that a name of a person or the section of the cemetery? Thanks Angela

    3. Hi Angela, >From the date you gave burials were still allowed in NYC. A law was passed (I think about 1850) that no longer allowed burials in lower Manhattan. That is when Queens became the "cemetery place." Many graves were dug up and reinterred out of the city in order to free up valuable land. There is a book you might want to try to locate. It is called "The Graveyard Shift: A Family Historian's Guide to New York City Cemeteries" by Carolee Inskeep. Possibly you can get it on Inter-Library Loan. A quick search on the Net shows a "Methodist Episcopal Cemetery" in Ridgewood Queens, and another in Flushing Queens. Maybe you can find more here.. http://longislandgenealogy.com/LIGRecords.html#QueensCounty There is also a Hauppauge Methodist Episcopal on Long Island.

    3. Angela, Go on http://www.stevemorse.org and look for the link the NYC Death Indexes. You may be alble to locate the death certificate in 1923. Then you can order it from the NYC Dept. of Records, Municipal Archives. There are forms for this online.
