It also could depend on how long the people were in the U.S. I have a marriage certificate from 1866. It lists where he was born and where she came from. Later on many of the certificates just state "Germany." I just located the birth certificate of their first born son. It seems she was born in a bigger place nearby. They must have been living in the smaller village when they immigrated.
