Y., March 29 (AP) – His death sentence commuted to life imprisonment today by Governor ROOSEVELT, Fred W. EDELl, alleged slayer was in the Sing Sing hospital tonight recovering from a case of nerves brought on by his ordeal of 14 months in the prison’s death house. Only the supporting arm of a keeper prevented EDEL from swooning to the floor when he was informed of the governor’s action. He was able to stammer out only a few words of appreciation. Four times had EDL been prepared to march down the corridor to the death chamber and once his doom was only fifteen minutes away when word of a reprieve rescued him. Another time he had been dressed in the black suit that condemned men wear when they die but again the preparations were halted less than an hour before the switch was to have been thrown. EDEL is alleged to have killed Mrs. Emma HARRINGTON, an actress and intimate friend who was found beaten to death in her New York apartment in December 1927. He has maintained his innocence. http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/link.php?action=detail&id=82803 SOURCE: http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/link.php?action=detail&id=82803
