Barbara, I was glad to find a way to get public records volumes info off of Ancestry as it is much easier to find there than just in a Google search. I have submitted my database on line and updated it regularly for nearly six years now and have no complaints at all. However, it does not include people born after 1910 unless they have a death date. I do subscribe to Ancestry and enjoy its many records. However, I have chosen to place my database on Rootsweb/Worldconnect--you know, the same great place we are posting to here. That way it is available to everyone, regardless of subscriptions. (Rootsweb is supported by Ancestry but so far remains separate; if this changes, my database still includes only people born after 1910, etc.) My database offers various options, like showing or not showing sources or notes in the gedcom. I always show sources, and I never show notes as they may include more "personal" information. I do not allow the downloading of my gedcom. Anything taken has to be hand-typed. I don't care if someone "steals" all my sources because I want people to know where the information comes from--and you will notice how infrequently databases show this. This is a wonderful, fun hobby (since 1986), and sharing is half the fun. I worry about just this sort of situation, as I know how much personal information I've found about people when I've searched.? And, the same sort of stories in which people will just incorporate your family into theirs without doing any background searching to find out if they're even related.? That said, I'm delighted when I make a new family contact, through Ancestry.? And recently, I've been fortunate to find three new relatives because they've posted at least parts of their tree on Ancestry.? I'm hunting down (is that genealogically correct?) another person who would be a cousin of some degree.? So, I've reaped the benefits, but haven't contributed by doing the same thing.? ?
